Little boy saved a piece of banana cake for his late granddad — when told he was in heaven, his reply moved everyone to tears
Children make sense of death in their own way, blending curiosity, emotions, and imagination. When Instagram user Natalie (@natalie.s.t.howard.x) was making banana cake with her little son, he offered his grandmom and granddad a piece of the cake. However, when his mom reminded him that granddad had left for heaven, he said something that brought both her and his grandma to tears. Sharing the heartbreaking video on September 3, 2025, Natalie revealed that she was stunned by her son's emotional intelligence.
Instagram user Natalie's father and the little boy's granddad had passed away. On hearing his offer of cake for his grandparents, both Natalie and her mother were in shock. His mother immediately paused and told him that his granddad was in heaven. However, what they weren't ready for was the profound sentence the little boy was going to tell them. In a heartwarming revelation, he said he was “just waiting” for his granddad to have a piece of his banana cake, indicating that he was imagining his granddad returning from heaven to enjoy it.
His answer took his mother by surprise, who immediately went for an embrace; however, her son gently pushed her, telling her that he wanted to cuddle his nanny instead. His sweet gesture towards a grieving grandma touched his mother's heart, who shared the heartwarming video online and wrote, "Well, that caught us completely off guard. Also, I think he might be more emotionally intelligent than most fully grown men I know?" Many users were flabbergasted to see the little boy's empathy. Some even noted his act of wanting to hug his grandmother instead, as a sign of maturity at a young age.
@lady.nads mentioned, "I just love how he held that hug for nana knowing she needed it more, but still glanced to you for a split second for love and forgiveness." @melinda_samay noted, "I love the son's and nanny's reaction, but I broke because of mum's reaction. The way she stopped, processed, and even gulped shows she was going through a lot of emotions." @suus__enzo remarked, "'I'm just waiting' that kills me. I remember feeling this as a kid, not quite understanding yet how definite death is."
Young children can instinctively offer comfort when they sense a parent’s sadness. In another story, a 14-month old baby's reaction to his mother crying caught her off guard. Young mother Taylor explained that it had been a difficult evening, with the usual after-work routine, which left her feeling exhausted. However, as soon as her baby noticed her in distress, he held onto her sleeve and constantly leaned in to hug her. Even though she gently told him she was okay, he continued to cling to her and offered her comfort. The unexpected reaction from her toddler was exactly what she needed at that moment.
