Man at the gym asked a woman for her Instagram after 15 minutes checking for a wedding ring — her answer left him apologizing
Getting the courage to approach someone you find attractive can be hard enough, especially when you’re trying to make sure they’re actually single. Instagram user Christian Schilling, who goes by @cschizzle, thought he had done his homework before approaching a woman at his gym, even spending 15 minutes checking for a wedding ring. Posting about the story on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, he said that after he finally worked up the courage to ask for her Instagram, one simple question revealed that he had completely missed an important detail.
After finishing a set of overhead presses, Schilling finally caught her alone and walked over to where she was using the stair stepper to introduce himself. He told her, “I thought you were really cute,” and asked if he could get her Instagram. She pulled out one of her headphones to respond, but before she could say anything, Schilling asked, “Do you have a boyfriend?” Her answer immediately made him realize his mistake. She said, “No, I have a husband.” Embarrassed, Schilling apologized and explained that he had actually spent about 15 minutes checking for a wedding ring before approaching her. That’s when she held up her hand and pointed to the tiny ring he had somehow missed, which Schilling joked was "thinner than a strand of hair."
Although the woman's small, awkward reply shut down the conversation quickly, he said he felt especially embarrassed because he had been so sure he had checked carefully before approaching her. He apologized several times and admitted that he had not noticed the ring at all. In his defense, he joked that it was so thin he had never seen a wedding band quite like it and said he could not have spotted it from several feet away. Still, he acknowledged that the woman had been very nice about the awkward situation.
Despite the embarrassing moment, Schilling didn't seem to let it discourage him from putting himself out there. He explained that, as a single man, he has been seeing plenty of videos encouraging women to be approached and decided he had to at least try. This time, his attempt simply ended with an unexpected lesson about looking a little closer before making a move. The story also had Instagram users cheering him on rather than making fun of him. One person, @cristina.demian.9, commented, “So what? You tried, and good for you,” adding that the woman should feel flattered. Another viewer, @miss.tee11, said, “Aw good for you for trying!” and added that she was sure he had made the woman’s day. Meanwhile, @brynnmoves simply wrote, “I love that you went for it.”
Approaching someone you find attractive can take a lot of courage, but sometimes the person you're interested in has a reason for saying no that you simply didn't see coming. Similarly, in another story, a young man approached a woman at the gym and asked her out, but she went completely silent. Thinking he had said something wrong, the woman took a step back and explained that she didn't have anything against him. Instead, she said the man was her son's age, leaving him completely surprised.
