Man at the gym flirted with her twice before asking which college she attended — his next age-related question made it far more unsettling
Some interactions in public places can leave people wishing they had never happened. Instagram user Katie Kelly shared how a man at her gym had flirted with her twice, but a later question about her age made her rethink his interest. He approached her while she was working out and started a casual conversation. But what started as a normal encounter soon took an uncomfortable turn. Sharing the incident under her handle @katiekelly on Monday, August 24, 2026, she explained why the interaction left an impact on her even after it ended.
The conversation became unsettling when the man asked which college Kelly went to. After she revealed she didn't go to one, he seemed surprised and asked her, "How old are you?" She then simply told him she was 26. The man immediately commented that she looked really young for her age. His reaction felt odd to the content creator, and she asked him what he meant. He then explained that he had guessed she was around 20 or 21. Kelly asked his age and learned that he had just turned 30. She instantly connected the answer with his earlier behavior and pointed out that he had already flirted with her twice while apparently believing she was much younger, which made it seem really inappropriate.
Kelly did not continue the conversation after that point. She put her headphones back on and returned to her exercise, making it clear that she was no longer interested in talking. The man appeared surprised by her reaction, but Kelly stood by what she had said. She later recalled telling him that his behavior was weird and that she had to call him out on it. Setting a clear boundary can bring an uncomfortable conversation to an end without giving it more attention.
Women shouldn't have to feel uneasy while simply trying to get through a workout, yet some unwanted attention can make that difficult. In another similar incident, a woman's normal gym session became uncomfortable after a stranger approached her. He first praised her appearance and called her "jacked," making the exchange seem friendly. However, his approach soon became more personal as he asked questions about her life and tried to get her contact details. She told him she was already in a relationship, but the conversation didn't end there.
He then asked about her age and made a comment about how young she looked, like someone who still goes to high school, which quickly changed her mood. She felt that the two actions did not fit together after he had already asked for her phone number, and thought his approach was inappropriate. She later pointed out, “Telling a woman she looks like a teenager is not the compliment you think it is.”
