Man at the gym told a woman she was ‘too pretty to be Mexican’ — her sharp response turned his stereotype against him
It’s very easy to associate stereotypes with different cultures and forget that it can be hurtful to others. An Instagram user named Pam, who goes by @pamelafraustro, shared a post on Monday, July 27, 2026, about a German man who made a bold statement about her appearance and ethnicity. He told her she couldn’t possibly be Mexican because she was beautiful. According to him, it was a compliment, but he soon realized why it felt offensive when she responded with a sharp comeback.
Pam was at the gym when a man heard her speaking Spanish and assumed she was from Spain, prompting him to ask which part of the country she came from. That’s when she clarified that she was Mexican. He repeatedly complimented her beauty before telling her she couldn’t be from Mexico because “Mexicans are all ugly as f**k.” The stranger insisted he was only praising her. That’s when she put him in his place, saying, “Well, you don't look German because you’re short.” He was a bit offended, but refused to understand her point.
Initially, she tried to explain that people are often surprised by her nationality because they don’t realize there is a lot of diversity in Mexico. Yet, the man continued insisting that he was confused only because, according to him, there are no good-looking Mexicans. Even after she remarked on his height and he was offended by it, he still reinforced the irrational belief. Pam simply asked him to think twice before making comments like that in the future because it’s not okay to speak about someone's culture that way.
She added that his tone and attitude didn’t seem like he intended to disrespect the country, but even then, it was important to correct him. “Every culture has its own beauty and its own diversity, and so it’s very ignorant to say something like that,” Pam said. In her caption, she reiterated, “I will make a public example of anyone who wants to shame a person, a nation, etc.” Commenters who shared similar experiences were equally disappointed. @gratzielaa3 wrote, “It’s insane, the amount of people who think it’s appropriate to give you a back-handed compliment.” @c818919t5147 remarked, “You put him in his right place.” @namesjosephkupo added, “It's giving 'you're not like other girls.'”
Sometimes, such remarks stem from ignorance or a lack of knowledge, while other times they reflect a sense of superiority that undermines the diversity of different cultures. In one instance, an employee grew frustrated after her coworker constantly made jabs at her Thai food. Known for its spices, fermented aromas, and ingredients such as garlic and fish sauce, the dishes were often prepared by the woman for office potlucks. The rest of her colleagues enjoyed them.
However, one coworker kept making comments like, “That's pungent,” and “Your food is so intense.” She crossed the line after asking the woman if she had grown up “eating bugs.” One day, the employee brought a Thai dish as usual, and also prepared a plain chicken breast, steamed veggies, and ranch, without any seasoning. She set it aside and labeled it with her coworker’s name. Needless to say, it was embarrassing, and the colleague was not happy about being singled out.
