I just found out my mom has been sending my girlfriend cruel messages for who knows how long. I don’t know how to handle this (M36/F32)

The man mentioned he had been in a happy relationship with his girlfriend for a couple of years. He described her as a "silly, shy, and goofy" person whom he had never loved like ever before. He added that she's smart, brilliant, and one of the kindest people he's come across. One day, when he was scrolling through reels on her phone as usual, he noticed a text from her friend, who was comforting her for a bunch of screenshots she had sent on Instagram. Hesitantly, he opened it to find the shocking truth. The chat contained multiple screenshots of her conversation with his mother, who repeatedly made rude remarks to the woman. His mother often belittled her for not giving her son an heir, while mocking her for not being proposed to yet.
One of the texts reads, "If you stopped dressing like a teenage boy and put on some makeup, maybe he'd see you as a wife instead of one of his little friends." He mentioned how he was furious about the situation and at his mother. "I’m exhausted by this. She knows how much my girlfriend means to me. She hears me talk about her constantly. I really thought she might actually be happy for me," he said. What hurt the man most was how his girlfriend chose to hide it from him, presumably not to hurt his feelings. "She's just been carrying this alone. Smiling, laughing with me, all while this garbage was sitting in the back of her mind," he wrote.
According to research published by professors Christine E. Rittenour and Jody Koenig Kellas, it was found that many daughters-in-law often receive hurtful messages from mothers-in-law. These involved texts that were "over or under-involved, personal attacks, and full of hurt." The woman chose to hide the texts from him. However, this gesture deeply upset the man. He felt guilty for being unaware of the situation earlier. He requested users to offer ways he could help his partner feel safe and supported. u/Fun-Interaction-9006 wrote, "Propose to her if you love her so much. I wouldn't stay with a man for that long without commitment, sorry if I'm too harsh. Show her that love you speak so highly of. Good luck." u/AmbitiousCricket5278 shared, "I honestly would create a slide show for the next big family day and present her comments. Make everyone know, make her pay." u/Various_Bed_1888 wrote, "Switch her number for yours in your mom's phone and let the games begin."
