The bond a child shares with their parents is one of the most profoundly bittersweet relationships. Just as it is a priceless feeling for a parent to see their kids grow up into a successful and kind person, children also feel immense pleasure observing their parents transition into the next stage of life. A young musician named Jude York (@itsjudeyork), like many other adult kids, couldn't help but notice this change in his mom aging gracefully. However, as he sat with his mum at his childhood piano and played the popular “Slipping Through My Fingers” by pop group ABBA, he made another realization about this unfathomable journey of life that resonated with many.

York revealed that he often visits his childhood home in Queensland, Australia, to be with his mum and use his piano, per PEOPLE. His videos capture him bonding with his 65-year-old mum, Liza Beamish, over music as he plays and sings with his mother. However, in one video, as he sang the popular piece by ABBA, he learned another truthful fact. The song, which is initially associated with a parent’s perspective, describes how parents feel seeing their little ones grow up to face the world by themselves. The song, which is a mix of pain, pride, joy and many other feelings, also has a particular idea of letting go as children grow to become independent adults.

As York began to record himself and sing the piece on his piano, his boomer mum randomly heard and joined him. She began harmonizing the lyrics of the chorus. He recalled several times his mum joined him for duets. However, this time, as he sang, he realized that his mum was aging and it was going to be a full circle moment for him. "It took me back to the first show I ever did. She brought me into the world of music, and now I’m her only way back into the world of music, which is kind of surreal,” York noted. He recalled how his mom was a talented performer in her earlier days and would bring people “to tears” with her skillful and soulful music.

This time, as York took on the lead to sing, he noticed his mother right behind him, singing soulfully but a little older, a little weaker and a little more fragile. He realized that as he had completed his growth and become an adult, it was now his mum who was going through a process of change. The roles were inverted, and just the way his mum watched him grow, he had to watch her complete her life. As heartbreaking as it is, it also holds a poignant but peaceful feeling, knowing the journey is a complete and wholesome one. "If you’re lucky enough to see your parents start to age and go through any sort of complications, whether minor or major, it is ultimately a privilege," York explained.

The musician added, "But it is also scary to see the passage of time and to watch your parents go from these immortal beings who seem to live forever and remain ageless to suddenly realizing they’re fallible, mortal beings and they’re getting older.” The lyrics, “Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the pictures and save it from the funny tricks of life,” resonated with many. "As we were recording the song, we both got emotional, wiping away tears, thinking, 'Why is this hitting us so hard?’” However, York was not alone in this realization. Many adults shared the bittersweet feeling. @katherineoliviaj wrote, “My mum is in her final hours and I’m sitting beside her with my newborn. Thank you for this.” @hardenne added, “I don’t want to live life knowing I’ll have to live life without them someday.”
