Man tried to get a business-class passenger to swap seats with his son so they could sit together — his lie unraveled before takeoff
Swapping seats with other passengers has been commonly seen during flight travel. However, most disputes arise when parents expect strangers to give up their seats to accommodate their children. A Reddit user who goes by u/anbiru was boarding a flight when they noticed a couple arguing with the flight attendant over their seating arrangement. After settling into their seat, they were immediately cornered by a father who asked them to swap seats with his son, seated separately. According to the post shared on April 12, 2026, the business-class passenger refused to exchange the seats the moment they looked at his son.
The father approached the business class passenger and mentioned that his son was seated at the back of the cabin. He even lied about traveling only with his son when the passenger had already spotted his wife with him. But when they saw the son, they refused to entertain his request. "Guess how old he was? 20! He is 6 feet tall and does not appear to have any mental or physical disability," they lamented.
The passenger revealed that the woman ultimately gave up her seat for her son. They also believe that the airline likely moved him back because he lacked status. Recalling the incident, the user expressed frustration at the parents causing inconvenience to other passengers just so they could sit together as a family. "Many of us appearing 'single' who have been asked to give something up for parents. The injustice gave me the energy to shut it down even in this very small way," they wrote. The post resonated with many readers, who sided with them over the ordeal.
A Reddit user who goes by u/BobVoyageTravel wrote, "I really will never understand how people even ask a stranger to accommodate their issue. Good for you." u/jethrine recalled, "Congrats! Feels good, doesn’t it? Shutting down a bully is supremely satisfying." u/MopMyMusubi commented, "I have a rule for changing seats: unless it's an upgraded seat or they're about to hand me some cash."
Many passengers do not take no for an answer. They simply believe they are entitled to whatever they demand. In another story, a Reddit user experienced a similar attitude from fellow passengers. After she refused to swap her MCE (Main Cabin Extra) seat with a father traveling with his 6-year-old son, the mother stormed over from her Premium Economy seat and demanded that she give up her spot. However, when she denied, the woman escalated the conversation into a full-blown argument. She even accused her of being selfish, despite being a mother herself. The passenger argued that although the woman hurled abuse at her for turning down the request, she never offered her seat instead.
