Man worried he’d have to say ‘no’ to people asking for too much at food bank — their selfless questions left him humbled

He expected a shortage of food to become a problem until he faced a completely unexpected issue

Doing volunteer work or working in service-related fields can leave people with several doubts and questions about how to deal with certain situations and customers. One man who goes by u/MichaelJDigitalNomad shared a similar experience on Reddit on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. When he had just started working at a food bank in Port Townsend, Washington, his primary concern was dealing with those who would ask for more than was permitted. He didn’t want to say no and thought deeply about how he would politely refuse. To his surprise, when he faced these people, they instead had questions that caught him off guard.

The man explained that he had joined last April. He didn’t assume that the people coming in for food were greedy. Instead, he understood that they likely didn’t have consistent and secure options and would likely want to store up as much as possible. Yet, he also knew he had a duty and certain protocols to follow. While he wondered how to fix the dilemma, he was faced with other questions. “Four months later, and having served over a thousand clients, I now know what an idiot I was all those months ago,” he said. Instead of people asking for more, they asked, “Are you sure you have enough for everyone?" "I don't want to take more than my share," or "I'll leave that for someone else."

The worker explained that due to “the cutbacks in federal benefits and the ever-increasing cost of groceries,” it was nearly certain that people would want to stock up on free food. He noted that he’d likely do the same if he were in their place. To his surprise, people did the opposite. Out of the many he served, only two may have asked for more than usual.

While he was worried about having enough to give everyone, in reality, he faced the opposite problem: “Trying to get people clearly in need to take what they need.” They were somehow so selfless that he had to assure them that there was enough and that they deserved their fair share. While he practiced how to say no, he found himself at a loss for words when people had a very different interaction altogether. They never demanded extras; the most common statements were, “Thank you for being here" and "I really appreciate what you do.”

The man was moved by the humanity he saw there. Their generous nature, even though they had nothing, left him inspired. He even shared the link to donate to the food bank after Reddit users requested the same. Many people believe that when you have plenty, you can be prim and proper. However, some can’t afford the fancy things but have the things money can’t buy — kind hearts and generosity.

In another story, a homeless man surprised a mom named Amaya Cortez with what he did when she handed him her credit card and asked him to buy himself some food. Out of everything he could have done, he purchased a $5 sandwich and handed the card along with the receipt to the woman. His gratitude, respectfulness, and honesty became an unforgettable memory.
