Manicurist asked a first-time US visitor to tip after charging $92 for her nails — the customer's simple question left the salon silent

The rate was $80, but the foreigner paid more to comply with the taxes in the States.

When it comes to money matters, especially while paying a bill with different additions, it is important to ask questions. A woman who goes by @officialiroyal shared a post on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, recalling a conversation she overheard at a salon. A foreigner was getting her nails done, and after she was finished, she was quoted $92. The artist then asked if she would like to tip. The woman was caught off guard and asked the employee one simple question that made the entire room go quiet.

The tourist was visiting the USA for the first time. After the woman finished getting her nails done, the artist told her she would have to pay $92. Confused, she informed her that the rate was supposed to be $80. That’s when the worker explained that after adding taxes, the total had increased. Reluctantly, she agreed and got exact change out. After receiving the payment, the employee asked if she’d like to tip before telling her that it was customary to tip for the service. Baffled, the customer asked why she needed to shell out more dollars if the $92 was inclusive of the said service. “If I pay $92 for my nails, why am I expected to pay extra for someone to do the nails I already paid them to do?”

The entire room fell silent. The worker didn’t know how to explain the tipping culture. The woman beside the customer laughed because she too was a tourist and had the same questions and perspective. Commenters who knew how tipping worked also suggested that deliberately asking for a tip was unprofessional. @ashb_85 wrote, “A $12 tax and she still expects a tip?! No way.” @rulekm noted, “Nope. If I pay the price for the service plus sales tax, there should never be a tip.” @margaret_tynne said, “It's getting to the point that I hate going to a salon.” Tipping culture has seen a lot of trends and inclusions, but the basic fact remains the same — if a customer likes the service, they will leave a tip. Asking them for one immediately ruins the experience.

In another instance, a man took his elderly mom for a meal at a restaurant. During the time of payment, the woman gave her card to the server, who entered it into the handheld machine. The server gave her the machine to complete the payment and waited there. To the customer’s surprise, she was suddenly shown auto-tipping options, and in haste, she selected 18%. Out of habit, she reached for her wallet to remove cash for gratuity, when she realized she had already left it through the machine. When she confirmed with the waitress whether the tip went through, she received a cold reply. The man noted that his mom was usually a generous cash tipper. She would have likely left 20% in cash had the waitress not rushed her with the machine and auto-tipping process. Her own haste cost her.
