Mom asked her daughters, 7 and 12, who they’d rather be stuck with — ‘man or bear?’ Their opposite answers revealed a disturbing truth

At times, children can have opinions that differ significantly from one another, even when they are siblings growing up in the same household. These differences can arise due to a variety of external influences, personal experiences, and the unique ways in which each child perceives the world around them. A woman named Jaime Hamilton shared a video on April 12, 2026, on Facebook, capturing a similar situation. She asked her daughters a question, presenting them with an identical scenario, but their answers were opposite and led to a striking realization.

Two daughters with a five-year age difference were put in a situation where they had to choose between a man and a bear for company while stuck in the forest. The mother first posed this question to her older daughter, age 12. She took a moment to think, understood the scenario clearly, and then replied: “I’d rather be with bear.” She reasoned that a bear can be avoided, but a stranger can act unpredictably. The mother then asked the same question to her 7-year-old daughter. Though it was a difficult choice, she picked the man, reasoning that he could bring supplies while a bear could be life-threatening

Their contrasting reactions reflect the differences in perspective, shaped by age and life experiences. Hamilton’s elder daughter, having experienced more of the world in those additional five years, viewed humans as just as much of a potential threat as a bear. She chose what felt safer to her in terms of predictability. Conversely, the seven-year-old, who has yet to fully experience the world on her own, chose what seemed the smarter option to her. She believed a man would be helpful and cooperative in that situation, whereas a bear would pose a clear risk to her life. “We could make our own shelter if there were no bear inside,” the little one said.

Although around 90% of a child’s brain development occurs by age five, as noted by First Things First, practical knowledge and the ability to handle real-life situations are nurtured through independent experiences and exposure to the world. In the case of Hamilton’s daughters, both share the same end goal, survival, but their approaches differed, largely shaped by their contrasting perspectives and the age gap between them. The mother featured at the end of the posted video looked confused, and the overlay text read, “What changes this perspective shift?”

The video has received almost 9,000 likes since it was posted. Many internet users also shared their reactions to what caused the perspective shift. Angela Walden wrote, “One doesn't know yet, and one knows. Sad for them both.” Another user, Kelsey Elise, added, “It's heartbreaking to know that by middle school, girls no longer perceive men as safe or helpful.” The older daughter’s response was certainly driven by her perception. “Makes sense, 12 is the age men started cat-calling me,” mentioned Denika Samuel. For Hamilton, this question offered a clear glimpse into the innocence of her 7-year-old daughter.
