Mom caring for her terminally ill 36-year-old son broke down from exhaustion before a nurse’s innocent remark made her laugh through tears
Looking after a terminally ill loved one means balancing hope with heartbreak. Instagram user Sam McGuire, who goes by @samalamadingdongdoo, recounted the time her mother broke down while telling the nurse how she had been having trouble sleeping while caring for her son, who was battling cancer. But the nurse's unexpected reply left the older woman crying and laughing at the same time. On Sunday, May 31, 2026, McGuire revealed the unintentionally dark comment the nurse made while trying to console her mother.
McGuire's mother eventually sought medical advice for sleep deprivation caused by caring for her 36-year-old son. While her doctors were aware of her situation, the nurses weren't. When she spoke to one of the nurses about not being able to sleep well, the nurse asked if she was drinking too much caffeine. McGuire's mother, who did not wish to narrate her entire ordeal, vaguely told her that she and her family had been going through something lately. The nurse, unaware of why the elderly woman was crying, said, "It's okay, everything comes to an end." She added, "This will pass, and it will all be over."
McGuire got a call from her mother, who was sobbing and laughing at the same time, as she recalled the mortifying conversation she had with the nurse. Sharing the video with her followers, McGuire noted that her mother indeed found the remarks funny and surprising, and that they had been laughing about them for more than 48 hours. McGuire's mother immediately realized that the nurse was unaware of her situation, and therefore took her innocent comment in good humor. Fortunately, it helped lighten her mood during a challenging time.
McGuire's video had internet users in stitches, with many equally shocked at the nurse's response. They also appreciated McGuire's family for embracing dark humor during the difficult period. @theraewhite21 joked, "Somehow everything the nurse said got worse." @rosielol19 mentioned, "Love when patients join us in our dark humor, especially when we mess up like that! Wow! Happy she found the joy in really rough situation. So sorry about your brother." @jenwu89 recalled, "In the pediatric stem cell transplant unit where I used to work, there hung a comic that said 'If you’re having a bad day at work, just remember that someday you will die.'"
