Mom objected when woman said she’d breastfeed on the flight, accusing her of ‘exposing’ herself — the cabin crew’s response left no doubt
Breastfeeding in public can already leave mothers feeling self-conscious, so having another person object to it can make it much more uncomfortable. Dr. Meghan Martin, who goes by @dr.beachgem10 on Instagram, found herself in that situation when she was breastfeeding her 6-week-old baby during a flight from Buffalo to Tampa. Martin was sitting next to children whose mother was seated on the other side. She shared the decade-old story on September 14, 2026, recalling how another mother accused her of exposing herself, but the flight attendants made it clear whose side they were on.
Martin was exclusively breastfeeding her baby, so she knew she would need to feed him during the 3-and-a-half-hour flight. She gave the fellow mother a heads-up, but the woman immediately objected, telling her to use the bathroom and bring a bottle and accusing her of wanting to "expose" herself in front of her children. Martin pushed back, saying, "I know my rights," and explaining that her baby was entitled to eat. When the woman became louder, flight attendants stepped in and told her, "She has every right to feed the baby on the plane." They also pointed out, "With how well concealed the baby is right now, I don’t think you have to worry much," and offered the woman the option of changing seats.
Martin said the situation ultimately settled down without the mother changing seats or moving her children. She later admitted that she probably should not have given the woman a heads-up in the first place because the baby was so covered up that she did not think anyone would have noticed. Still, the encounter stayed with her because she had heard the same arguments used against other breastfeeding mothers before. Looking back, Martin said she almost wished social media had been as popular back then because the incident would have sparked a much bigger conversation.
The story also drew reactions from other mothers online. @jdizzle_0_3 wrote, "A mom saying this to another mom is actually mind-blowing. Educate your children!" while @sarahsnewborncare said, “It’s crazy to me as a mother that she reacted that way." Another commenter, @tayy047, remarked, "The people complaining can go eat their dinner in the bathroom or hiding somewhere inconvenient and often gross."
For Martin, though, the bigger point was simple: breastfeeding a baby should not have to become a public debate. As she put it, "Just let people feed their babies in peace." She said this because new mothers often face unnecessary judgment over breastfeeding. In another story, a new mom named Jessie Maher was breastfeeding at a Target café when a stranger began yelling at her and calling the act "disgusting." The man was eventually escorted out, while another mother and several employees stepped in to comfort Maher and remind her that she had every right to feed her baby there.
