While picking out a partner for a lifetime, one wants to ensure they’re making the right choice for the long run. We look out for some core elements that can assure us a person will become a strong, loving partner for life. For many people, these core elements and parameters are different. Madi Messer (@sweetteawithmadi) shared a poignant factor people can consider while finalizing their life partner. She shared the advice her mom gave her and her friends when it comes to confirming that this one person is who you want to be with forever. Sharing the video, Messer mentioned that her mom and her friends were having a girl’s night when she shared the striking piece of advice.

Messer’s mom said clearly and emphatically, “The person you marry, you need to know with all your heart, will take you through the death of your mother and the death of your father.” The mom explained that the loss of a parent is one of the most heart-wrenching experiences ever and one needs to ensure that their partner will be able to support and comfort them. The girls agreed in a confident chorus. The mom went on to elaborate on her own story. She recalled being sure that her now-husband would be able to get her through her mother and father’s death. “When I married my husband, I knew that and we talked about it. He knew how hard it would be for me,” she remarked.

With her voice cracking up as she spoke, the mom couldn’t stress enough the brutality of the loss of a parent and how important it is that your partner stand by you. She also added that though each situation may be different, it will be painful and the person one marries needs to know how to get their partner out of the hurt and wallowing grief. Several people agreed with the mom, starting with couples who already experienced the tragic loss of their parents. @eyesusedtobefunny wrote, “Marriage is not the wedding, it's the lifelong commitment to share each other’s grief, debt, pain and transformations. This is how my husband and I knew we were right for each other.”

@daisycornelius added, “This is great advice and I have to share my experience. This is why I broke up with my ex of 5 years. My mom died when we were together and he was awful. I left him right after my mom passed.” @loreeshauliscampbell remarked, “My dad died and my husband proposed and carried me through. He is now carrying me through the hard part of my mother's aging. He’s a keeper.” @marymerryquitecontrary added, “Marry a man you know will take care of you on your deathbed. Watching my best friend’s dad take care of her mom at the end of her life changed my perspective on love.”

@vickieflaugher wrote, “Death changes you. A life partner needs to understand that. It’s not just supporting you in grief but also embracing the new person you become.” @sunkisseddd11 added, “Find your twin pillar. Someone who can see you at your hardest and choose to hold your hand and not just stand at the sideline.”
