Mother saw her daughter use sunscreen before a normal day out — the next morning, she was in the ER searching for answers
Following an everyday skincare routine rarely feels alarming until one unexpected incident makes you rethink everything. One mother and educator, Sukhi Dhillon, shared one such frightening experience on her Instagram account. In her post on her handle @onesikhmom on June 6, 2026, she explained how her daughter's simple regimen of applying sunscreen to her face, ears, and neck unexpectedly led to an emergency room visit, leaving the family worried as they searched for the cause.
She revealed in the video that her daughter's eye had become extremely swollen after she returned home. The mother-daughter duo continued their day, expecting it to settle down on its own; however, the condition only worsened. The following day, she could barely keep her eye open. She even developed rashes on her neck. Sukhi then rushed the youngster to the emergency room, where the doctors revealed she had developed cellulitis (a bacterial skin infection) after using the sunscreen that had expired 6 years ago. The product had been applied to the skin that was already affected by eczema, leading to a severe infection. She shared that her daughter could not find the expiry date on the packaging and thus proceeded to use it.
The woman stayed by her daughter's side the night before, assuming it was an allergic reaction until it became serious and prompted a visit to the ER. The doctor explained that the infection had reached deeper into the tissues, raising concerns that the swelling around the eye could affect nerves or blood vessels nearby, causing further damage. According to the British Journal of Dermatology, patients with atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, are more prone to skin infections and equally at risk of recurring infections. The weakened or broken skin barrier allows bacteria to enter more easily, which can lead to common symptoms like inflammation or crusting. Fortunately, after completing the antibiotic dose, the young woman's symptoms disappeared.
Considering it a lesson, Sukhi said one needs to be careful about any product they apply to their face and skin. She pointed out that it is easy to become lazy and continue using expired products, especially makeup and skincare items, without realizing their risks, but caution is crucial. The experience even proves that minor symptoms should not be ignored. In another case, a man dismissed his neck pain from weight training, which later turned out to be far more serious. After experiencing continuous headaches and tingling sensations for months, he suddenly had a seizure. A CT scan showed the young man had a lesion in his brain. He underwent a long 9-hour surgery and later continued to fight his battle with the aggressive tumor through radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
