New father refused to sign his baby’s birth certificate without a DNA test — but the mother knew exactly what she had to do
A child's birth evokes a lot of positive emotions in parents. It is a moment of mixed feelings, but rarely one of doubt and insecurity. Threads user Charelle Groves (@charellecleveland) was disappointed when her husband refused to sign their baby's birth certificate without a DNA test. At a time when he should have been celebrating the birth of his daughter, he was dwelling on negativity and doubting his own wife. When she was faced with that unexpected and shattering behavior, she knew what she needed to. Sharing the heartbreaking story with Threads users on Sunday, May 10, 2026, the mother revealed that she knew she had made the right choice years later.
Groves' unforgettable moment in her life was on the day her daughter was born. However, the moment was bittersweet for the young mother. When it was time for the parents to sign their newborn's birth certificate, she was taken aback by what her husband did. He was suspicious of the child being his because of what had happened to one of his cousins, and demanded a DNA test before signing the document. "Mind you… that was the first time he had ever mentioned something like that. Knowing he was my first everything," she noted. At that moment, she looked at her daughter and wondered, "How could you even look at her and question if she's yours?" She decided there was no room in her or her daughter's life for someone who wasn't sure of them. She immediately asked him to leave and never look back.
Years later, her daughter has now grown into a wonderful young girl, and the mother cannot express enough pride in raising her all by herself. "Happy Mother's Day to me. I love you, my sassy/sweet girl. It's you and me forever, girly," she wrote. Research has consistently pointed out that trust is fundamental for successful relationships. According to a study published in PubMed Central, trust in relationships is essential in building stable partnerships. "Lack of trust can lead to negative reactions, lying, low relationship quality perception, and attachment anxiety, negatively impacting relationships," the study noted.
Although Groves' husband signed the document later, the damage was done. The mom's post resonated with many online users. @phl2fbx commented, "I wouldn't have allowed him to sign the birth certificate. If he wanted a paternity test so badly, he should have gone through the court system and paid for it all." @fionasparrow wrote, "My husband was there for the birth, but as soon as he saw we had a daughter, he walked out of the delivery room, obviously very angry. The marriage lasted 19 months, and my daughter is the one good thing that came out of that time; she's amazing." @gatopirato remarked, "People are the worst. But look at that beautiful baby! You made that!"
