New mom checked a medication transfer on her phone while waiting at Costco — then a stranger made one remark to her baby she couldn’t shake

She was bothered because the judgemental shopper knew nothing about her life or her struggles.

Bystanders are quick to offer judgment, especially when it comes to parenting, not realizing that there is more to the visual in front of them. Instagram user Julia Grace Cook experienced this while visiting Costco with her baby, Oliver. She was waiting in the pharmacy line and using her phone to check the transfer of a prescription from another pharmacy. Within those few seconds, another shopper saw her and decided she had comprehended the entire situation. She later shared the experience on Instagram on August 6, 2026, through her account @juliagracecook, explaining how the woman made a statement to her baby that made her feel judged as a mother.

The older woman standing nearby suddenly looked at her baby and said, "Mommy's on her phone, you need someone who's going to talk to you." She continued telling the infant that he needed someone to play with, and she would naturally know since she was a grandmother and knew what babies needed. Julia said she only gave an awkward smile because she was too surprised to respond. The pharmacy worker soon called her forward, so she moved on with her errand. Still, the exchange stayed on her mind during the rest of the day. She was bothered because the shopper knew nothing about why she was using her phone or what she was handling but still chose to judge her actions.

A parent's actions can look very different when someone else does not know the entire situation. Julia explained that she had been checking an important prescription, not ignoring her baby. What made the encounter harder was that the woman spoke through her baby instead of simply talking to the mother. She expressed that while the stranger may not have had any bad intentions, the comment still left her feeling uncomfortable. She added that new mothers already deal with enough pressure without having strangers judge their parenting in public. They tend to spend a lot of time questioning whether they are doing things correctly, and comments like these add to the stress.

New mothers often become a target of unwanted attention and judgement. While they're drowning in exhaustion, trying to figure out the best for their baby, they are met with unsolicited advice, instructions, and comments that leave them even more insecure and unsure than before. In another incident, a mom was overwhelmed trying to pacify her baby. The woman, who was six weeks postpartum, was struggling with her newborn, who was wailing frantically. After receiving judgmental looks from onlookers, she rushed out and burst into tears in the parking lot. Just then, a stranger came to her aid. She took her bags from her hands and asked her to check on her baby. The good Samaritan even helped her put her groceries into the car. Even though it had been a while since the incident, the mom said, "I think about her a lot."
