Newlyweds left guests shocked when groom shaved bride's head — everyone clapped after learning the powerful reason
Couples want to look their absolute best on their wedding days. Brides and grooms can hardly imagine themselves voluntarily choosing to shave their heads at their wedding in front of guests. But Jony Lee and her husband Alistair wanted to make their big day special by saying goodbye to their head for a thoughtful reason. According to PEOPLE, Jony and Alistair tied the knot in November 2020 in Kumeu, New Zealand and they had about 120 guests in attendance. But nobody expected what was about to come next when the married pair hit the dance floor. The couple decided to pay tribute to Jony's mom Luna Macapagal in the most emotional way possible.
Macapagal was undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer when she attended her daughter's wedding. In a heartfelt TikTok video that Jony posted on her profile @jonymlee, we can see Alistair settling on a chair in the middle of the dance floor as the wedding guests bubbled in anticipation. "Hey, Mom. We love you so much and we want to show you our solidarity with you," Jony spoke in the microphone emotionally. "My parents think we are going to do a traditional Filipino dance where you stick money into our clothes and blah, blah, blah to get more money. But what we're doing, if you do have a bit of cash on you, is we are going to be shaving our heads for cancer. And whatever money you lay down in front of us, we will be donating it tonight."
The wedding guests roared and cheered for them. Then Jony took a hair clipper and started running it through Alistair's hair. The family and friends appreciated their idea and showed support by placing money around them on the floor. After Alistair was done buzzing his hair off, it was Jony's turn. She started undoing her hair which was beautifully set by some hair stylist. Alistair took the clippers this time and started shaving off his newlywed wife's long and lustrous hair. Then they brought in Macapagal and the trio had a beautiful moment dancing together slowly. Jony was contacted by PEOPLE where she elaborated about the highlight of her wedding and why she and her husband decided to shave their heads.
She revealed that Macapagal was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2018. She briefly went into remission but the cancer returned once again. "We talked about how we would shave our heads together for her next round of chemo. Instead of a next round of chemo, she was informed that she would be moving into palliative care as she was past being able to be treated," Jony recalled to the outlet. "I had already had my mind set on shaving my head and thought instead I could use it as an opportunity to raise money for the Cancer Society." She didn't expect Alistair to join her too but he was more than happy to shave his head for the right cause.
Jony also explained that "it was an act of solidarity towards her mom's journey" and "being bald was a huge visual reminder of what happens to a person when they have cancer." "When I looked up, everyone was in tears. It had only occurred to me at that moment that although I was doing this for my mother, cancer affects so many people. Our solidarity transcended being just for my mother but for all those who know the pain that cancer brings," Jony shared, adding that the act was a "liberating" experience indeed. Sadly, Jony's mom died on January 12, 2021, but her "spirit remains with her daughter."
