Nurse placed newborn on his mother’s chest as she lay in a coma after cardiac arrest during childbirth — what the baby did next stunned ICU staff
Miracles exist around us, and they appear in the most unexpected ways that stay with you for life. For nurse Paige Overhultz, one night at work early in her career gave her a memory that still gives her chills thinking about it years later. On May 26, 2026, she shared the story on her Instagram, @rawr_its_paige, recalling how a newborn’s mother had suffered a medical emergency during delivery and remained in a coma. But when Paige placed the baby on the mother's chest, something happened that left everyone surprised.
Paige Overhultz was in her early 20s and working as a mother-baby nurse when she admitted a newborn whose mother had suffered a cardiac arrest during delivery. Doctors managed to revive her, but she remained in a coma on a ventilator in the ICU, unable to hold her baby. Paige cared for the newborn in the nursery and spent much of her first night carrying the little one around, making sure the baby still got skin-to-skin contact. The next night, she got permission to bring the baby to the ICU and gently placed the newborn on the mother's bare chest. What happened next left Paige stunned. Without any help, the tiny baby, not even 48 hours old, turned toward its mother, latched on, and began nursing, as if instinctively recognizing its mother.

Paige said she could hardly believe what she was seeing. She had held the baby against her own chest, and the father had done the same, but neither time had the newborn tried to nurse. Yet the moment the baby was placed on its mother's chest, it seemed to know exactly what to do. Paige, the baby's father, and the grandmother watched as the tiny newborn began nursing while the mother remained unconscious. The grandmother had also been praying nearby, making the moment even more emotional for the family.

Paige still thinks about that night years later and considers it a miracle. She acknowledged that some people might see it as a newborn's natural instinct, but for her, witnessing it firsthand was something extraordinary. "If that doesn't give you cold chills, I don't know what will," she said in her video. Paige also gave a reassuring update in the comments, revealing that the mother eventually made a full recovery. Several months later, she even sent Paige a heartfelt letter and followed up with a birthday announcement when her baby turned one.

Viewers were deeply moved by the story and talked about how birth in itself is a miracle. @jan_connelly wrote, "I think birth is a miracle. I used to work in labor and delivery as an RN and postpartum nurse. I think every birth is a miracle. Beautiful story." Meanwhile, @auntienatcatgrace showed gratitude toward nurses, commenting, "Nurses are angels among us." Another viewer, @joani_88, noted that newborns can do this naturally, adding, "Yes, newborns do this naturally! It’s amazing."

Miracles in the labor room are something nurses often get to see. A similar moment of connection happened when premature twins Saige Imani and Oscar Lee Price Jr. were reunited after spending 10 days in the NICU. When their mother, Amanda Price, finally had both babies placed on her chest, the newborns unexpectedly reached for each other and held hands. The nurses were so surprised that they grabbed their phones to capture the moment. Amanda later shared the photo online, writing, "This moment meant EVERYTHING to us."
