10-year-old girl named 'Miracle' helps her mom deliver baby sister at home — her calmness surprises 911 dispatcher on call

Once a pregnant woman’s water breaks, everyone has to act fast. There is no perfect determination of how long it is before the baby starts making its way out. The labor pain, too, is unbearable and it can be dangerous to wait for prolonged periods to get help. In 2022, the then-10-year-old Miracle Moore was with her mom, Viola Fair, at home when things took an unexpected turn, per TODAY. The mom’s water broke, and she was in labor, but the baby was coming faster than they had expected. The little girl swiftly got to work and, with the help of a 911 dispatcher, heroically delivered her baby sister.

As soon as Moore noticed her mom’s condition, she dialed 911 and was connected with Scott Stranghoener, per KSDK News. The only option at that time was for the mom to deliver at home, but even then, there was so much uncertainty about how things would follow. Moore spoke to Stranghoener for 11 minutes during the process. “I think my mom’s in labor,” the 10-year-old said over the phone. Stranghoener immediately began guiding her on how to help her mom. He quickly noted the things to do and not do, the position to be in and so on.

Fair was having trouble lying down as per the dispatcher’s instructions, but the vigilant Moore stayed by her side and sprang at every suggestion Stranghoener made. The girl quickly unlocked the door in case the medics arrived and got blankets and towels for the mom to lie on. Along with updating and coordinating with the dispatcher, Moore was also supporting her mom, encouraging and comforting her. With the swift turn of events, Moore could see the baby’s head. Stranghoener told her that he would be guiding her and helping her deliver the baby.

“She’s coming! She’s coming! She’s here! Her head is here,” she yelled. Soon, Moore welcomed little Jayla, and as per instructions, she wiped the baby’s face and placed her in a clean towel. “Be very careful, don’t drop the baby, okay?” Stranghoener cautioned. Eventually, the medics from Christian Hospital arrived and were guided to the mom and baby. The dispatcher was impressed and stunned by the obedience and brave look the girl put on throughout. “I learned pretty quickly that we had a serious situation. We have a set of protocols that we follow and she followed all of my instructions to a ‘T’ and did an amazing job,” he remarked.
The mom, too, was surprised by her impressive control over the situation. “It was definitely a miracle because once I had the baby, she came out, I couldn’t really grab her and pick her up and then Miracle came and she wrapped her up in a towel,” Fair said. She added that Moore wiped her and even rubbed her back so she could cry. Katie Barbero, a paramedic at Christian Hospital, said, “We just picked the baby up first thing, wrapped her in a blanket and yelled ‘Happy birthday.’ It was good. We love seeing good outcomes for families and stuff like that. We do see a lot of bad things, but one of these special moments is the best because this is what we do it for.”
