Obese passenger was humiliated when a flight attendant loudly denied her a seat belt extender — then an elderly man made an unexpected offer
Being mindful of other passengers' feelings can make shared spaces like airplane cabins feel more welcoming. For Carolin Tyler, an Instagram user, what should have been a routine moment on a flight home from Sweden quickly turned into one of the most humiliating experiences of her life. On May 2, 2026, Tyler, who goes by @carolin_rny, shared that asking for a seat belt extender left her embarrassed in front of nearby passengers, until a kind fellow traveler stepped in with an act of compassion she'll never forget.
Tyler explained that on her flight home, she quietly asked a flight attendant for a seat belt extender before takeoff while seated in the emergency exit row. She expected the request to go as smoothly as it had on her earlier flight. Instead, the flight attendant looked at her, glanced at her seat, and loudly replied, "Absolutely not. You can't sit there during takeoff and landing with a seat belt extender," before telling her to ask another passenger to swap seats. It left her feeling humiliated as nearby passengers overheard the conversation. However, just then, an older man seated behind her gently tapped her on the shoulder and said, "I will switch seats with you during takeoff and landing." She said she has never forgotten his kindness.
Tyler said that she had flown from Sweden after visiting her mother and had intentionally booked emergency exit row seats on both flights because they offered more space. She also thought it would be the least inconvenient option for the person sitting beside her. She already knew she would need a seat belt extender because she had used one on the earlier flight. As Tyler tried to process what had happened, the older couple seated behind her appeared to notice how embarrassed she was. Tyler remained deeply grateful to both him and his wife for their kindness during one of the hardest moments she has experienced while traveling.
Although the stranger's gesture helped to ease the situation, Tyler said she spent much of the eight-hour flight trying to make herself as small as possible. She barely moved throughout the journey and replayed the incident in her mind over and over again. She also shared that she has felt a lifetime of humiliation because of her size, and the experience made her realize that empathy and compassion can make an enormous difference in someone's life.
Many viewers felt sorry for Tyler in the comments and also praised the older man's compassion. @veronica.marper remarked, "She was malicious for that. How weird to want to purposefully hurt someone." Meanwhile, @progressive.overhaul encouraged her, writing, "So painfully relatable. You are valuable, you are worthy, and you are loved, regardless of your size." @sweetpotatoduck recounted, "I was in a car ride with my cousins, and my siblings and my dad proceeded to lecture me on my fat and how I'm so out of control and obese in front of everyone for the next hour. I was 10."
Like Tyler, there have been other instances where a stranger's kindness has outweighed someone's humiliating act. In another story, a woman recalled silently crying on a flight after the passenger beside her repeatedly body-shamed her through text messages. Noticing what was happening, another traveler confronted the man, insisted on switching seats, and later comforted the woman, telling her she didn't deserve to be treated that way. She later called him her "hero," saying his kindness transformed what had been one of the worst flights of her life.
