Parents were mortified when 5 TSA agents searched their 10-year-old’s flagged carry-on — gloves and masks came out before an unexpected find

After going through security once, on their way back, when the bag was flagged, they couldn't understand what the reason could be.

Airport rules regarding luggage are very strict, and even items we presume are harmless should not be taken lightly if they are against the guidelines. A preteen creator on TikTok who goes by @maedyourday shared a post on April 23, 2026, recounting a story from the time she was 10 years old. During Christmas, she went on a trip with her parents and sisters. To her surprise, on her way back, at the Fort Lauderdale airport, five TSA agents stopped the family and began investigating her and checking her belongings. The search was intense, with officers using gloves and masks, only to find the most unexpected item.

The security agents took the family aside and first did a pat-down on the 10-year-old. The officers then put on gloves and masks and began looking through her bag. The first thing he pulled out was an animation kit’s doll. The agent was as confused as the parents. “No, it’s not this,” he said. They next removed her Marker Maker set and put strips into every dye and bottle to make sure there was no explosive material hidden. Lastly, he pulled out a slimy substance and was convinced it was something suspicious. But the little girl clarified that it was only silly putty. Not wanting to take a risk, he stretched it out to check it in detail. Turns out, what they thought was a bomb or some hazardous chemical was just the toys she received for Christmas.

The woman vividly recalled the experience. She mentioned that the trip to the place was easy, but on their way back, at the airport, her carry-on bag was flagged. It turned “neon red” on the screen, prompting multiple TSA agents to investigate. The officer was so concerned throughout the search that he had to call more authorities and a bomb disposal technician. After finding nothing but the toys the girl packed last-minute, they said, “We need to throw all of this away.” Not understanding the severity of the situation, the child started bawling her eyes out. Finally, a head agent walked over and cleared her items to go through.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, there are strict rules about liquids and gel toys while traveling. Such items need to be 100 ml or 3.4oz and below as well as meet certain requirements if packed in carry-ons. With specific rules, items of a larger quantity may be packed in the check-in luggage. Either way, the TSA officer gets the final say on whether the items are safe to be transported. The woman noted that her mom did help her 10-year-old self pack her clothes, but she was adamant about getting her toys and secretly shoved them into her carry-on, causing the whole ordeal. Her dad joked that her bag was heavy while getting it out of the car, but in all the travel rush, no one thought of checking it. Finally, everything was cleared, and the family went home, but since then, the memory remained as a humorous one. To date, her family members joke and ask whether she happens to have Silly Putty in her bag by any chance.
