People mocked him for wearing a dog’s leash and walking around the block — until one stranger asked why and his answer broke her

Two strangers recognized the same pain in each other, proving shared grief can create a connection faster than words ever could.

While loss is inevitable, the grief of losing never follows a designated timeline. Jerri Scherff, who goes by @sailorjerrithedogtrainer, shared on Instagram on Thursday, April 23, 2026, a story about a man's unusual behavior, which later revealed a story of grief and loss. She explained that she often drove past the same man and noticed that he always walked alone with a dog leash looped around his waist. The video has since gained more than a million likes.

The sight of a man wearing a leash and walking around the block stayed with Scherff. One day, she finally pulled over to ask the question many had likely wondered in silence: had he lost his dog? The man admitted, "Everyone makes fun of me for wearing the leash, but I just miss him so much." That simple response was enough to break her heart. Scherff began crying on the spot and stepped forward to hug him. She shared that she had lost her own dog, too, so she instantly understood the kind of emptiness he was carrying. In that brief roadside moment, two strangers recognized the same pain in each other, proving shared grief can create a connection faster than words ever could.

Moments like that are a reminder that people often mock what they do not understand, while quiet pain can be hiding in plain sight. The comment section shared the same compassion and expressed sadness that people were making fun of him. For example, @brittanyrcoates noted, "It’s his quiet time, and if that’s how he deals with his loss, so be it! Keeping him in my prayers! Both of you! It never gets easier! People are cruel, pets aren’t."

At the same time, @caseymilbrand remarked, "What a beautiful tribute to his dog. They walk with us forever." Plus, @sammys_chairot_of_fire raised an important point by saying, "Pet grief is so real. I think we really should take it more seriously. I lost both of my geriatric dogs within three weeks of each other a few years ago, and I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown." For many people, losing a pet carries the same heartbreak as losing any loved one, and it deserves the same empathy rather than being treated as something smaller.

For anyone who has built daily life around an animal companion, the silence these paw partners leave behind can feel enormous. In another story, a man wrote a heartbreaking letter to his late dog, Tika, just a week after she passed away. Shared by Thomas Shapiro, the note described how he still looked for her in every corner of the house and even mistook folds in the duvet for her resting there.

He wrote that he had not simply lost a dog, but a piece of himself, because so much of his world had been built around her presence. Much like the older man who still walks carrying his dog’s leash, Shapiro’s way of grieving may not make sense to everyone. But grief is rarely about looking normal; it is about holding on to love after there is nowhere left to place it.
