People panicked as SUV hit a barrier and bounced back into moving traffic — a witness’s split-second action prevented a major disaster
Road accidents can trigger chaos and panic, making it rare to see someone stay composed and handle the situation with presence of mind. That’s exactly what unfolded in a dramatic incident in early March in San Antonio. According to a March 31, 2026, report from FOX San Antonio, a driver lost control of his SUV on Loop 410 near Harry Wurzbach. It happened after he had suffered a heart attack. What could have turned fatal was caught on camera on the highway, capturing how the moment shifted into one of courage and split-second thinking by a stranger.
@fox7austin A San Antonio couple noticed a SUV driving erratically on I-410 and used their truck to intentionally stop it after realizing the driver was unconscious behind the wheel. The driver was reportedly suffering a medical episode and received immediate aid from a passing nurse before being transported to a hospital. Officials have not released details about the current condition of the hospitalized driver. #news #fyp #foryoupage #sanantonio ♬ original sound - FOX 7 Austin
The latest information about the incident has emerged from the video. It shows the SUV veering across traffic lanes, narrowly avoiding other drivers, including an 18-wheeler truck. Moments later, the SUV hits a concrete barrier, then bounces back toward moving traffic. Since the driver was unconscious, the only way to stabilize the vehicle was with external assistance or force. Here’s when one of the witnesses, Rene Villarreal, made a quick decision. He parked his pickup truck in front of the out-of-control SUV and applied the brakes, bringing the vehicle to a stop.
The video was filmed from inside the same pickup truck. In the video, one person can be heard saying, “Oh no! No! No! Somebody needs to stop him.” As soon as Villarreal realized the driver was unconscious, he overtook the SUV and positioned directly in front of it. He applied the brakes just before the impact, and the SUV collided with the pickup truck. Once the vehicle came to a stop, he said to the other person in the car, “Call 911.”
“I just acted off instinct. It was too fast to really process. I’m shocked,” said the 29-year-old who smartly prevented the fatal outcome. The driver has been identified only as Ben for privacy reasons. A nurse who witnessed the crash soon pulled over and began CPR, and paramedics arrived within 15 minutes. The driver had suffered a heart attack due to a 100% blockage and spent six days in the hospital recovering. He would have lost his life if it were not for Villarreal.
Ben's family expressed gratitude towards Villarreal. Villarreal was also awarded a $1,000 prize sponsored by a local AC servicing company. However, he remains grounded and feels happy that the man recovered. His courageous and life-saving act has also created a stir on social media and has received reactions from internet users.
@isawithorea mentioned, “Thanks for helping, God bless you guys.” One other user, @destiniatkinson123, wrote, “There's still faith in humanity.” Another user, @glo_cne, added, “Bless their hearts for helping.” Villarreal truly showed up like an angel that day, a stranger who made all the difference, “Ben, I hope you’re doing good, man,” he said later.
