Person walking past dumpster heard an unusual sound and looked inside — they immediately made a life-saving 911 call

You never know to what extent vigilance can help save a life. A citizen is being commended for being observant and alerting authorities to save a life, a press release from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office stated. The person heard unusual sounds coming from a dumpster as they were passing by on the 4000 block of Sun Valley Boulevard in Nevada and decided to check it out. Upon close inspection, they immediately made the decision to call 911. Their responsible and smart response saved a life. The authorities are further investigating the case.

The person was reportedly passing by a parking lot when they heard an unusual sound coming from the dumpster. They inspected further and found an abandoned infant inside. Putting on a thoughtful and responsible stance, the good Samaritan intervened by climbing into the dumpster and bringing the child out safely. They immediately dialed 911 and reported the situation. The emergency services, along with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, arrived on the scene and immediately had the baby taken to Renown Regional Medical Center. The authorities investigated the case further and shared an update in another press release.

An individual named Taylour Sierra Dickinson was arrested by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. The 28-year-old has been charged with attempted murder and child abuse, neglect or endangerment. The authorities are not sharing additional information to protect the identity and safety of the minor. The newborn is reportedly doing well after being sent to the Medical Center. The Reno Gazette Journal reported that the baby was dumped shortly after being born. Footage showed the mom throwing a garbage bag into the dumpster. Washoe County Sheriff's Detective Claire Hoops-Adams shared the woman’s testimony.

Dickinson confessed that she had wrapped the baby in a towel, put him in a garbage bag and gotten rid of him. The woman also reportedly claimed that she had no idea she was pregnant until she delivered. Dickinson also added that she didn’t want any more children and decided to put the baby there, hoping someone would find him. “She stated that she had no desire to have any more children, stating her family financially was living paycheck to paycheck at that point and they could not support an additional child,” Hoops-Adams testified. It was also mentioned that the mom didn’t even know if the child was breathing, nor had any clue of his gender.
The newborn was in the dumpster for around 10 hours before the stranger rescued him. The Washoe County Sheriff, Darin Balaam, commended the citizen for reporting the situation and saving the child’s life. “This child is alive today because of the swift and selfless actions of a community member who didn’t hesitate to help,” the officer said. “We’re incredibly grateful for their courage and quick thinking. I also want to remind our community that there are safe and legal options for anyone in crisis; no baby should ever be left in danger,” Balaam added. The court set a $1 million cash-only bail for Dickinson. Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks noted, "This is a heartbreaking case. The abandonment of a defenseless newborn is not only a serious crime, but a profound tragedy.”
