Plane returned to the gate after a flight attendant’s medical emergency — then a passenger said the one thing no crew member wanted to hear
Humans seem to be forgetting basic empathy, and incidents that prove this theory happen every day. One such incident was shared by a flight attendant and Instagram user, Sejal Patel, who goes by @smileysejalee, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. She recounted a shocking experience she witnessed that made her rethink humanity. She detailed how a flight attendant suffered a medical emergency just before takeoff, and instead of expressing concern for her, one passenger immediately got on a call and said something that came across as deeply insensitive.
Patel revealed what happened on her flight from Tokyo to the U.S. She explained that another flight attendant suddenly experienced chest pain, so the flight was halted and passengers were brought back to the gate. Amid this crisis, one passenger's response left her shocked. She revealed that this passenger called his friend to express his disappointment about the flight's delay and said, "Something happened to the flight attendant. I hope they don't cancel the flight."
Patel pointed out that while the medical emergency was unfolding, this passenger did not think twice before asking another flight attendant, "Hey, is this plane still going to go? Are you guys going to time out?" She revealed she was shell-shocked and expressed her anger at how the flight attendant, already dealing with a serious situation as her co-worker experienced a medical emergency, had to reassure this passenger about the flight status.
While she acknowledged that people have schedules to keep, she criticized those who prioritize their plans over another person's health crisis. She condemned this passenger's reaction, emphasizing that he only cared about when the flight would take off, despite having nowhere urgent to be. Patel pointed out that these flight attendants care about passengers' safety, away from their friends and family, and noted how frightening it must be for them to face a medical emergency away from home.
She extended her best wishes to the flight attendant who experienced the health crisis and expressed gratitude for the other flight attendant who left the plane to assist her colleague during this serious situation. In the caption of this video, Patel wrote, "To the guy who was concerned about the crew timing out ahead of her well-being — I hope you have the day you deserve. Don’t be like him."
Reacting to this incident, many people shared their opinions in the comment section of this video. A user named @ronniedunston noted, "People can be so self-centered." @slickta wrote, "So wrong; people only care about themselves. Disgusting. Thank you for sharing this." @__watley remarked, "Goodness me, what an incredibly selfish way to act at a time when someone is in desperate need of medical attention!"
A lack of awareness can be especially jarring when someone fails to recognize that the people around them are dealing with something far more important. A similar incident happened when a flight attendant was performing CPR on a passenger during an extremely tense in-flight emergency. Meanwhile, another flight attendant was performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation beside him, clearly showing the seriousness of the situation.
There was pin-drop silence in the cabin despite the presence of passengers. The crew members were completely focused on saving the life of the person experiencing a medical crisis. Despite this, one woman approached the scene with a stern face and asked, "Excuse me… when will you be serving the meal?" In a life-or-death situation, this unexpected question from the woman left the crew stunned.
