Postpartum nurse Amanda Price experienced complications at 25 weeks and 5 days into her pregnancy due to a previous scar issue and had to undergo a C-section. Her twins, Saige Imani and Oscar Lee Price Jr., were born and weighed two pounds each. While Amanda and her husband Oscar continue to make visits to the NICU, what happened on the 10th day took everyone by surprise. After being in the NICU for 10 days, the Price twins "met" each other outside the womb. The nurses brought the twins to their mother, Amanda, and placed them on her chest, and to their surprise, the twins held hands. "Nurses put them on my chest, and they randomly locked hands. The nurses all freaked out, and they took the pictures," Amanda told the outlet.
A study published by Umberto Castiello and colleagues found that twins begin forming social bonds before birth, which continue immediately after they are born. The study used 4D ultrasound to observe twin fetuses at 14 and 18 weeks of pregnancy and found that they made intentional movements toward each other, which were not random contact. Since this interaction starts in the womb, twins are already familiar with each other at birth. The findings support the idea that twin bonding begins before birth and is present from the earliest weeks of life, as experienced by Amanda through her twins. Since the twins were in the NICU, they hardly had time to spend much time together. "Once they get bigger and go to the other part of the hospital, they'll put them together a little more," she said.
Amanda shared the photo of them holding hands on her social media page (@perfect_blend) and captioned, "This moment meant EVERYTHING to us. This is the first time Oscar Jr and Saige Imani met outside the womb. Praying their bond will be like no other. Forever grateful for the NICU nurses. I owe them everything." Amanda revealed that her twins needed breathing support, but they are not on ventilators. "For 25 weekers, they're pretty good for their gestational age," she added. The twins were originally supposed to be born in February. Despite only being 4 weeks old, the twins have already developed their personalities, according to their mom.
"Saige is so sassy! Oscar will try to touch her and she'll move away from him. We call her 'Sassy Saige'!" she shared.
