Receptionist was convinced the office was haunted after filming the lights off, but his boss kept finding them on — her confession was even more unset
The workplace can become exhausting when those in charge create chaos instead of solving problems. A TikTok user named Joseph James, who goes by @josephjamestiktok, shared an experience from the time he worked as a receptionist at a chiropractor’s office. In his video posted on April 14, 2026, he recalled how his job included cleaning up, switching the lights off, and locking up the office. When he returned the next morning, his boss complained that the lights had been left on. Even after filming himself while doing his job properly and showing her the evidence, she claimed something was off. He became convinced the office was haunted, but the woman’s confession later stopped him in his tracks.
James’ duties at the time included preparing the office before patients came in and shutting everything down before leaving. One day, when he came in, he noticed his boss was already there, claiming he’d left the lights on all night. Confused, he decided to record himself switching everything off. Sure enough, the woman made the same claim the next day, and he showed her proof. She then suggested that the rumors of the office being haunted might be true. He believed his boss and began sharing his experience with clients. Fearing this might affect business, the boss confessed, “That was me.” She admitted that she had been moving things and switching on the lights just to “prank” the receptionist.
The man was left shocked because none of it made sense. Because of his duties, James was the first and last person to enter and leave the office each day. When the boss claimed he had left the lights on, he was suspicious but brushed it off. He cleared himself of any blame after showing proof, but odd things continued to happen.
He recalled how items would be in one place before he left, only to be in a different position the next morning. So when the woman suggested it was a ghost, it seemed like the only possible explanation. Suspecting his superior, who was the only other person with access to the office before him, seemed irrational. Besides, he assumed she wouldn’t have blamed him if she had been pranking him. But he was wrong. “She was coming in after me to move stuff around so she could get me into trouble…mental,” James remarked.
Some bosses mistake inconvenience for discipline, creating rules that only make work more exhausting. In another instance, a newly appointed manager removed all chairs from the register section, claiming they “looked lazy.” He was determined to create a more professional and energetic appearance and believed that sitting sent the opposite message. As a result, employees relied on company policy to make the rule backfire. Workers were entitled to short breaks throughout their shifts, but they had rarely taken them before.
Once the chairs were removed, employees became tired from standing for long periods and started taking those breaks. With multiple workers away from the registers during business hours, checkout lines grew longer, and customer complaints increased. When inspection time came around, officials were shocked to see employees "icing their knees" in the breakroom instead of working. The chairs were back the following week.
