Relative told 21-year-old she ‘didn’t look disabled’ and dismissed her chronic joint condition — so she proved it in a way they weren’t prepared for
Health problems are not always visible, and judging someone by their appearance can lead to hurtful assumptions. This was the lesson given by a Reddit user who goes by Robyn. A relative questioned whether she could really be disabled because she looked healthy and was young. She shared that she suffers from a joint condition, but the family member dismissed her issues. The 21-year-old revealed she has Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that causes loose joints that can dislocate easily if not careful. She said she has often heard comments like "You’re too young to have all those problems." While she usually explains to others that disabilities aren't always visible, and being able to walk normally does not mean her joints are okay, one time, her patience ran out. So, when a relative made the insensitive remark, "You don’t look disabled," she decided to give a direct demonstration. She then intentionally moved one of her joints out of place to show what her condition could actually do. The relative was left speechless as they noticed her arm now hanging away from its usual position.
"Yeah. It does that," she claimed. She said the questions stopped after that moment, with no comments on her age or her condition. While the incident made the relative understand her syndrome better, the youngster emphasized it was not the most sensible act and surely not a safe choice. "Now, I want to make it very clear that this was stupid. Please do not intentionally dislocate or sublux your joints. I already know. My doctors would probably reach through the screen and slap me for this," she wrote. Luckily, she was able to place her joint in its original position and continued with her day, while the relative remained stunned.
She also acknowledged the action may have caused more damage to her body, but she was beyond annoyed to let the comment go unanswered. The incident also highlighted why it is important to respect someone's explanation instead of making them prove their struggles. We can sometimes be too quick to judge others without knowing their full story. This is what happened in another incident where a woman using a reserved parking space was questioned by a stranger. She explained that she had been disabled for years and used a prosthetic leg that was not always visible. When the man commented, "You don't exactly look disabled," she immediately showed her affected leg to him, leaving him shocked.
