Restaurant cook had to work on the day they lost their best friend—a stranger’s kindness broke through their grief

You never know what a person around you might be going through. They may be battling one of the hardest and painful realities of life but won’t show it and will carry on like nothing ever happened. During such moments, a heartfelt gesture of comfort can be their strength. A restaurant cook who goes by u/Fun_Sized_Momo shared a post on Reddit on how a stranger helped them with an assuring gesture. They were battling grief and still showed up to work and this random, unexpected act of kindness became a soothing light to help them carry on. It is a reminder of the impact a loving heart can have.

In a comment, the cook revealed that they had lost their best friend on that day. There was undoubtedly pain and a roller coaster of feelings running through their mind. They showed up to work and were busy with the chores when they were handed a blank envelope. “Someone came in and gave these to the hostess and told her to give them to every employee and then immediately left,” the post explained. In another comment, it was revealed that there was nothing written on the surface of the sheet, pushing the restaurant staff to think it was some document or legal paper that required their attention.

When the cook opened the envelope, they were amazed to find a $100 bill along with a printed message inside the sheet. The message consisted of a request for a “favor” requested by a random stranger. It read, “If you are in need this Christmas season, please take this and get something for you or a loved one that you would not normally get! If you are not in need, please give it to someone who is in need.” The sender also asked that the recipient make another wholesome promise for the following year. “Promise yourself that you will help out someone you don’t know (in any way, big or small) next Christmas!”

The request took every employee by surprise. For the cook, who was particularly dealing with a devastating loss, the note felt like a hug. There they were, holding on, probably on the brink of breaking down, yet carrying on with work as usual. The stranger, having no idea of their pain, ended up offering a unique comfort and wanted nothing in return. “If you don't know me, forget my face. If you do know me, forget my name,” the letter read. The cook confirmed that they didn’t get a chance to see the person, as they had already left. At the end of the letter was a reference to “Samaritan,” revealing the sender's inspiration.
I'm a cook in a restaurant. Someone came in and gave these to the hostess and told her to give them to every employee and then immediately left. I didn't even get to thank the person because they were already gone. Thank you so much!

It quoted “the parable of the GOOD SAMARITAN in Luke 10:30-37: A person who is generous in helping those in distress.” The letter concluded by thanking the recipient for accepting the favor. “Thank you for being my Samaritan and Merry Christmas,” it read. This angel in disguise turned the cook’s day around. They added light when it felt like a despairing doom and were still humble about it. They took zero credit for themselves while inspiring others to do good and feel the joy of it. u/happyhappy2986 said, “Wow. How kind. They were looking to do something special for those who might not have otherwise had money to buy gifts.” u/nocturnalpnoy added, “The gift that keeps on giving! I love this!”
