She blamed the strange taste of the drink her guy friend made on vodka — until one alarming change in her eyes made her rush out 20 minutes later
When trust exists in a friendship, even something as simple as sharing a drink while watching a game at home can feel completely safe and unremarkable. That is exactly how Stephanie, a writer and content creator also known as @vibesysteph, described her experience in an Instagram video posted on June 10, 2026. But the way that game night during the 2019 NBA Finals turned into a frightening experience left her deeply shocked. She said she first ignored the odd taste of her drink, thinking it was just vodka, until one sudden change in her body forced her to leave within 20 minutes.
Stephanie explained that a guy friend she had known for about 8 to 9 years invited her to watch the game. She agreed, wanting to relax after work even though she was not a big basketball fan. They stayed at his home instead of going out since he said it would be less crowded, and she felt comfortable because she had been there before. While he made the drinks, she noticed he kept staring at her, but she brushed it off. He then gave her a vodka drink that tasted strange, which she assumed was just the taste of the alcohol as someone who always had rum. However, about 20 minutes later, she realized, her "pupils started dilating,” and that is when she knew something was wrong. She was convinced he had spiked her drink.
When you are in tune with your body, it's not hard to notice when something has entered your system. One sudden physical change made Stephanie realize the situation was not normal, and she immediately confronted him. She asked directly if anything had been put in her drink, and she described him as becoming “super defensive” in response. The shift in his behavior added to her fear, and she quickly decided she needed to leave. She then began packing her things without wasting time.
As she tried to leave, the situation escalated further when he attempted to stop her physically. Stephanie said she pushed or struck him in that moment, though she could not fully recall what she did, as her focus was only on getting out safely. She managed to leave the house and go home, where she felt cold, shaken, and unable to settle for hours. The experience affected her deeply, leaving her unable to sleep that night, and she called in sick the next day as she struggled to process what had happened.
Sadly, women don't have a choice but to stay vigilant of their surroundings. In another incident, a woman named Maddy Velez shared how a night at a club in Austin turned frightening after she suspected her drink had been tampered with. She had ordered a single drink, yet soon felt confused, dizzy, and far from normal. She even collapsed once, and security assumed she was intoxicated and asked her to leave. Feeling scared and disoriented, she later recalled how two strangers stepped in to help her, saying, “We’ve been through this before, we're going to help you.” She also noticed a man staring at her in the bathroom, which added to her fear. She was then safely guided out of the situation and later reunited with her boyfriend, who brought her home.
