She called a flight attendant after a 6'5" passenger kept pushing into her seat space for hours — but the words that came out weren’t a complaint

On an 11-hour trip, she hoped she'd speak with a flight attendant to stop the man's unwanted behavior, but her own words left her shocked.

Long-haul flights are already uncomfortable, and it may get worse when there's a middle seat assigned. But for Instagram creator Lam, who goes by @itslammmmmm, an 11-hour journey became far more stressful after the passenger beside her repeatedly invaded her personal space. In a video posted on Monday, July 27, 2026, she shared that she had been assigned the middle seat on a British Airways flight from London's Heathrow Airport to Los Angeles. A 6'5" passenger beside her had taken most of her legroom. When she called the crew to help, she said something unexpected and avoided confrontation over the man's behavior.

Lam was seated between two guys. While the man on one side of her was respectful, the much taller passenger on her other side slowly took over more of her space. It started with him hogging the armrest, despite her elbow being there too. Eventually, he pushed his leg towards hers, taking up half of her legroom. Even after politely asking the man to move and pressing the call button for a flight attendant, nothing really changed. No one came to help until about an hour before the plane landed. Instead of complaining, she found herself justifying the traveler's behavior. She explained to the flight attendant how she knew he was a bigger man and needed more space, and couldn't understand why, almost like a reflex, she chose to be accommodating instead of calling out his behavior.

Looking back, Lam said what upset her most wasn't just the passenger's behavior but how she responded to it. Instead of feeling confident that she deserved the space she had paid for, she found herself wondering whether she was being unreasonable simply because she was smaller than the man. In the comments, viewers resonated with what the woman had experienced, while some suggested that she should have confronted him more directly. @gman_w1 commented, "I'd have ordered a drink then spilt it all over his lap." @jaycktee suggested being more direct, "'Excuse me, your leg is in my space! Can you move your leg?'" Meanwhile, @_wheresangela said, "I feel your pain. I would've said to him, 'You're sitting too close to me, it's making me uncomfortable.'"

Uncomfortable flights caused by other passengers aren't uncommon. In another story, a traveler said a connecting flight became miserable after a mother and daughter blocked the middle seat with their luggage before takeoff. Even after they moved their bags, the flyer said that the pair continued disrupting their space for the rest of the trip, making it difficult to relax. The person even asked them to switch seats to make things easier, but they turned down the offer. Like Lam, they were left feeling uneasy in a space they had paid for, due to another's recklessness.
