She intervened when a stranger became aggressive toward a woman on the subway — then a bystander said something neither expected
A crowded subway ride can become uncomfortable within seconds when someone refuses to respect another passenger's boundaries. Content creator Lynn Nguyen recently shared an unsettling experience from her morning commute that left her questioning how bystanders respond during tense situations. In an Instagram video posted under the username @lynnnguyen18, she recalled noticing a man repeatedly bothering a woman, who was clearly trying to avoid him by wearing her headphones. When the stranger reached toward the woman, Nguyen stepped in without thinking, hoping to distract him and prevent the situation from getting worse. However, the encounter took another unexpected turn when a fellow passenger commented on what had happened, leaving both women even more stunned.
Instead of calming down, the man turned his attention toward both women and became increasingly aggressive. Lynn explained that she and the woman exchanged a quick look and silently understood they needed to stay calm and de-escalate the situation because they had no idea what he might do next. The man stood with his fist close to Nguyen's face and started throwing racial remarks at both women. They tried to remain polite, and the man eventually left. In that moment, another passenger who had watched everything, sitting in the same subway car, removed his headphones and said to them, "First mistake, talking to him."
His comment stunned the content creator and the other woman more than anything because it came after he had silently witnessed the women being harassed and both of them trying to protect themselves. Lynn later expressed frustration that the man's first response was to criticize and blame them instead of helping during the confrontation. She pointed out that he had seen the woman ignore the stranger, watched him try to grab her, and even noticed the threatening behavior toward her. Yet he chose to offer advice only after the situation had already unfolded. Nguyen ended her story by saying the entire encounter was certainly "a great way to start my morning," using humor to describe an experience that had clearly left her shocked and disappointed.
One should stand up when they witness something wrong, especially in public places. In another incident, a woman became uneasy during a subway ride after noticing a man sitting across from her behaving strangely. She believed he was secretly taking pictures of her and decided to confront him. The man denied it and claimed he was only "looking at his photos," but she remained unconvinced. He soon left the train without explaining himself, leaving her shaken by the encounter and unsure about what his intentions had been.
Before the man disappeared, she quickly recorded his appearance so other women could be cautious if they came across him. She later shared the experience online, explaining how uncomfortable it was to feel watched without her consent. The incident also showed why speaking up can matter, even when someone is unsure about what another person is doing. Her frustration was also clear when she asked, "Why can’t women just be left alone!"
