She was juggling six kids and 12 bags at the airport when her husband came to ‘help’ — one stranger’s quiet comment brought her to tears
Traveling with young children is stressful enough, but doing it largely alone can feel exhausting. One woman caught the attention of comedian Debra DiGiovanni after calmly juggling six children, strollers, and bags at the airport. On Thursday, July 30, 2026, Debra, who posts on Threads as @debradg, shared how she noticed this mom struggling, but the father's actions left her frustrated. She then shared a few heartfelt words with the mother that left her emotional.
Debra recalled watching a struggling mom trying to manage six children under the age of 10 at the airport. She mentioned that the latter was keeping the children entertained, calming them down, and pushing strollers while also handling a mountain of luggage. Just as she reached the check-in counter, the dad arrived, announcing, "Help is here!" But instead of taking over, he picked up just one baby and walked away, leaving the mother to check in 12 bags and manage everything else on her own. Before the family left, the woman gently touched the wife's arm and told her, "Hey mom, you are doing a great job." She said it moved her to tears.
The brief encounter stayed with Debra long after she left the airport. In her post, she mentioned that seeing the mother's overwhelming duty in real time left her frustrated. And the father's version of "help" made things worse. While she didn't know the family, she hoped the mom would realize she deserved better than carrying almost the entire burden on her own. What the traveler witnessed also relates to what researchers call the "mental load" of parenting. A 2024 study published in the Archives of Women's Mental Health found that women often take on a disproportionate share of the invisible work involved in raising a family, including planning, organizing, and anticipating their children's needs. Researchers also found that this mental load was even more unevenly divided than physical household chores and was linked to higher levels of stress, burnout, and poorer mental well-being among mothers.
Her post quickly resonated with thousands of people, including parents who related to the struggle. @jkarenparker wrote, "One time my husband flew by himself with our three kids and the airline upgraded him for free because apparently that was a heroic thing for him to do." @calmoceansales hoped the father could change, writing, "I hope she finds a way to teach him and he learns. Both of them will be happier." @susanjelliot called out the man, saying, "She has seven children. Seven." The story also served as a reminder that even a few kind words can make someone carrying an invisible load feel seen.
