Stranger asked two teen girls he met in an elevator what floor they were going to — their instant reply prompted a safety warning they wouldn’t forget
Women’s safety in public spaces is compromised, and even giving out a single piece of information that seems harmless can cause trouble. TikTok user KenJos recently described how he taught this lesson to two teenagers he encountered in an elevator. In his post shared under the handle @emptyofwhat on May 15, 2026, he revealed that he simply asked the girls which floor they were getting off on. When they responded, he shared one statement that became an unforgettable piece of advice.
When the man asked the girls their floor number, they quickly told him where they had to be. Without skipping a beat, he said, “Don’t ever tell a man ahead of time what floor you’re going to.” He further explained that only after the other person picked their floor should they reveal theirs. The reason was simple: if the stranger happened to be a creep, a stalker, or a dangerous individual, they would have simply followed the girls to their floor. Furthermore, they would have likely gotten information about their room number. One giveaway is enough for someone to put together an entire puzzle and take action.
KenJos' lesson aligns with safety tips shared by California Defense Academy. It recommends trusting one’s instincts even before getting into an elevator. If something feels off, it’s better not to get in altogether. The guidance also suggests staying alert, listening for conversations that feel suspicious, and paying attention to people’s behavior and the surroundings. Should you feel like something is not right, don’t hesitate to get off at the very next floor. Acting as a good Samaritan, KenJos shared the important lesson with the girls and also reminded viewers that it is crucial for women to stay vigilant and think ahead in situations like these.
Fellow users added to this advice. @acadiajoy said, “Hotel desk people need to stop announcing the room number when they give you the key, too.” @amberj3333_ added, “On behalf of mamas of daughters everywhere, thank you, sir.” @jennifer.redeemed suggested, “If he is already in an elevator, wait and get on the next one.” It's sad that women have to be on their guard at all times, but it's the safest way to protect themselves. In another instance, three friends were in an elevator when one of them noticed a man secretly taking pictures of one of them. One woman named Sarah Sweeten immediately confronted the stranger.
At first, he denied the accusations. Yet, she trusted her instincts and what she had seen. She alerted her friends, Tayia Rasmussen and Lindsey Harper, and called him out in front of everyone present. The trio demanded he step out of the elevator, and when she checked his device, sure enough, there were pictures of the women. She made him delete them on the spot, and he apologized to them. Sharing an important message with fellow women, Sweeten said, “Something doesn't have to be illegal for it to be not okay.”
