Even a brief exposure to fire, particularly one as intense as a wildfire, is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious complications, including breathing difficulties and other health risks. The situation can be more critical for older people. Therefore, when an 87-year-old man experienced a similar incident after he inhaled thick smoke from a wildfire for several hours and was taken to the emergency room, as reported by the New York Post on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. However, what doctors later discovered during his examination and treatment was so astonishing that it felt straight out of a sci-fi movie.

The unidentified elderly man had developed shortness of breath and was rushed to the emergency room. He was put on a ventilator while doctors began examining his windpipe to determine what was causing his shortness of breath and why his blood oxygen levels had dropped. What they ended up discovering shocked everyone. Multiple thick, black, branch-like plugs were found inside the 87-year-old’s airways as well as in his lungs. They weren’t just a few, as one might expect; they appeared in many irregular, branching forms of varying sizes, giving them an almost sci-fi-like appearance.

Doctors diagnosed those branch-like plugs as bronchial casts. It was found in the trachea and air passages of the lungs (bronchial tree), and resembled tree branches. They turned out to be a symptom of an extremely rare and severe condition known as plastic bronchitis. According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, plastic bronchitis is a lymphatic flow disorder that can lead to severe breathing problems. In this condition, lymphatic fluid in the airways forms rubbery, caulk-like plugs known as casts, which can block airflow during breathing.

These casts are made up of mucus and cellular material and are typically white, tan, or beige in color. These symptoms occur when there are irregularities in the flow of fluid in the lymphatic system. This colorless fluid carries white blood cells and proteins to the veins, and eventually returns to the bloodstream for essential immune functions. The lymphatic system normally absorbs excess fluid from organs and returns it to the bloodstream.

When this flow is disrupted, lymph fluid can leak into the airways, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, chest pain, fever, and a persistent wet or dry cough. Asthma-like symptoms can be one of the early signs of this condition. Early detection of Plastic Bronchitis can make a significant difference, especially when followed by timely treatment. As in this elderly man’s case, the early detection, although it left everyone taken aback, led to him receiving the correct treatment promptly. He was discharged after a week-long battle with pneumonia, and his breathing returned to normal within two weeks.
