Tall passenger was stuck in a middle seat for 15 hours — but one thoughtful gesture to the crew at boarding changed his trip in unexpected ways
Getting an uncomfortable seat on a flight already gives a passenger the impression that the trip is going to be exhausting. However, for Tales Gomes, it was quite the opposite. Sharing on his Instagram page @talesggomes on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the man said he was disappointed to learn he would be cramped in a middle seat during the journey. It was a 15-hour flight, and no one was willing to switch. However, one gesture towards the flight attendants gave his trip a much-needed boost.
Gomes mentioned that as a tall passenger, he knew the middle seat would not be fun. Since it was a long flight, he tried to ask others to switch, but it went in vain. Yet, his journey was mesmerizing, all because he chose kindness. On a whim, he got a few chocolates and handed them to one of the flight attendants while boarding. The woman was moved by the gesture and excitedly promised to distribute them among the crew. That simple act got him something far better than another seat. He was first offered options for his meal despite being on an economy flight. The crew served his meal before the others, and also gave him a couple of extra snacks and coffee.
Before deplaning, they gave him an extra meal as well. During the flight, the staff member came and thanked him for his kind gesture. Gomes noted that being grumpy about his seat could have been an easier option, but after an incredible trip, he knew he didn’t want to fuss about one minor thing and ruin the entire holiday. “Sometimes you can’t choose your seat, but you can choose your attitude,” he wrote in his caption. That’s why, instead of grumbling, he picked treats to appreciate the cabin crew and let them know that their hard work had not gone unnoticed. And that itself earned him a memorable flight.
As Gomes suggested, a simple act of kindness is not necessarily to be done out of expectation for a reward. However, the act itself is so powerful that it has its ways of lighting up the giver’s day too. In another flight story, a passenger was preparing for landing when a flight attendant came and gave them a bag of free snacks. The crew member said, “I just wanted to thank you for your kindness today. You’re very sweet, and we all appreciate it.” The individual was speechless and spent the next few minutes trying to understand what they had done to deserve that reward. Throughout the six-hour flight, they kept to themselves, watched their movie, and slept. There was no grand gesture to make them deserving of the freebies. It later dawned on them that throughout their interaction with the staff, they consistently said “please” and “thank you,” and were polite. That simple decency left a mark on the staff.
