Teen asked a disoriented woman struggling in 103º heat where she was headed. Her reply made him stop her and ask for her son's number instantly
One of the first steps in making a life-saving difference is noticing when something seems unusual. A report from ABC 15 Arizona, dated July 10, 2026, revealed how one 14-year-old boy did just that and saved an elderly woman. Royal Cothrun spotted 75-year-old Theresa Morgan struggling as she walked with shopping bags in 103º heat on an isolated road. According to a clip shared by ABC World News, he stopped to ask her where she was headed. She revealed something concerning, and the teen knew he had to intervene.
Cothrun was on his bicycle, enjoying a ride as usual, when he saw Morgan walking alone. He was wearing his Meta glasses, which captured the entire exchange. He said she appeared to need help, and so he asked where she was headed. When the woman said she was going home, the boy pointed out that there were no apartments around here. It turned out that the 75-year-old had dementia and had wandered miles away from home and had no idea where she was. The teen offered to look up her home address, but when he realized that the stranger needed assistance, he offered to call her family.
The woman reportedly went shopping at a local grocery store and missed a couple of turns while heading home. Unbeknownst to her, she had wandered 2 ½ miles away. Using his quick thinking, Cothrun first helped her get to a shaded area. He then asked her to recall her son’s contact information so they could get in touch with her family. Cothrun also stayed with Morgan until the medics arrived and made sure she was okay. The Gilbert Fire Department commended the teen’s actions. One department member added, “She’s so fortunate that she came across him, and he cared enough to stay with her and help her.”
Morgan was safely reunited with her family. She even celebrated her 76th birthday recently. The family is grateful to Cothrun and says he’s nothing short of a hero. Observing even the slightest details can make a difference. In this case, the 14-year-old noticed that the woman appeared disoriented and knew there weren’t any homes nearby. It was enough to convince him to act. In another instance, an Amazon driver named Wilmar noticed a 92-year-old woman, Gigi, waving at him. He said many people greet and wave to him while he is on duty, but her actions looked different. It seemed like she needed help.
When he went over to her, he spotted a medical bracelet on her wrist. “It had her name and her information, as well as who to contact,” he recalled. Gigi had advanced dementia, and her Ring camera captured her wandering away from home until she was no longer in sight. The woman had no idea where she was going, and fortunately, she came across Wilmar. He contacted her granddaughter, Karen, who guided him back to their home. The driver gently helped the elderly woman to her doorstep and ensured she was safe. For many, people like Cothrun and Wilmar are angels.
