They fell in love as teens but life pulled them apart—until a phone call 65 years later made sure it wasn't the end

Life might not go as planned at all times. But it could carry sweet surprises for some people. Two childhood sweethearts were separated by a series of events in their lives. Nonetheless, the two teenagers never thought that they would find their way back to each other over six decades later. Frederick Paul and Florence Harvey started seeing each other around 1950. However, Fred had to move to look after some business for his father. One thing led to another and the couple was separated. Until their love got a second chance 65 years later, per CBC.

The couple was deeply in love with each other and spent quite some time together, but in 1955, Fred's father asked him to go to Nova Scotia for some work. The man decided to visit his brother in Toronto afterwards, but unfortunately, he ran out of money there. So he had to take up a job there to get sufficient funds. Fred stayed there for over a year before he decided to go back to his hometown for a visit. But right at that time, Florence had joined a summer school and was away from home. "She was off to St. John's to take a teaching course for the summer school and we didn't get to meet again. After my vacation was over, I came back to Toronto and then we went our separate ways after that," Fred recounted.

In the following years, both of them got married to different people and started their families. "I was married for 57 years and he was married for 60," Florence pointed out. The two of them hardly ever talked to each other in all those years. "She was my first love. My first girlfriend and my first true love," Fred told CNN in 2021, a year after he met Florence again. Both of them had lost their spouses after being married for decades. They were both lonely and needed company. However, the two didn't know that love was right around the corner for each of them, per CBC. Both of their brothers lived in the same senior living facility and had decided to help the couple reconnect with each other.
"We both have brothers in a seniors' home in Marystown, so while I was visiting my brother, his brother was there. He said, 'I'm gonna give you Fred's number,'" Florence explained. Fred had agreed to share his number, but didn't think Florence would be interested. So he was really surprised when she actually called him. The two of them shared the experience of losing their spouse after decades together and feeling alone. Soon enough, they started talking a lot more often and felt their love coming back to them. Months later, they met once again on Fred's birthday in July, per CNN.

"When I found out she was in town and was coming to me, it was 10:30 at night. I ran out of bed and got dressed and wrote 'Welcome Florence' in chalk on the driveway and when she arrived, I walked to the car, gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek and I held her hand and I knew right away that she had taken my heart," Fred recalled. The couple got married only three days later. At that time, Fred was about to start his treatment for stomach cancer in a month. So the couple had decided that they wanted to spend all the time they had together. Florence shared that they would visit their old town in Newfoundland to relive their memories as teenagers.
