100-year-old man in love walks blocks every day to visit his wife of 75 years at senior care home
There is no fixed recipe for a happy and long-lasting marriage. However, every couple who remains in love till the end of their lifetime sure has a whole lot of devotion and care for one another. One Winnipeg couple has been setting an example for the younger generation on how they have continued to be at each other's side at the ripe old age of 100, per CTV News Winnipeg. A centenarian named Jack Mudry developed mobility issues in his old age. However, that was not enough to stop him from visiting his wife, Stella, who was put into a care home.
Mudry continued to walk five blocks regularly to reach the care home. "I ask God to help me," Mudry said, per the outlet. "Help me with my movement, with my walking, because I walk there and back." Mudry and Stella met back in 1947 while getting a ride from Winnipeg to Sandy Lake. The pair met on the way and fell in love. "Stella turned around and kissed me," Mudry recalled. After three years of courtship, Mudry and Stella married and they have been inseparable ever since then.
However, Stella's health problems spiked in 2023 and she had no other option but to move out of their retirement home and to a care facility. But the distance could not separate the loving couple. "He really misses her, and she really misses him," Mudry's daughter, Alexandra Todd, mentioned to the outlet. "And he likes to pretend sometimes that she's here but he knows that she's not." So Mudry started visiting Stella at the care home whenever it became possible for him. At times, he gets a ride but he mostly walks to his destination.
Todd also added how her father started his walking trips to the care home in the winter of 2023. "And I'd hear about it, and he'd be excited. And to tell you the truth, I think it did good for him," she admitted. There have been times when the staff at the retirement home where he lives advised him to not walk for 30 minutes to the care facility as it might affect his own health. But Mudry never paid attention to any of those advice. "When I make my mind up, I just dress up and I'm going," Mudry declared. "And I don't care what anybody says." As of now, Mudry continues to walk to Stella's care home often, keeping their 75-year-long bond alive.
Just like Mudry and Stella, another elderly couple in their 90s was interviewed by content creator William Rossy, who goes by @sprouht on Instagram. In Rossy's video, the older man revealed he was 95 and the pair had a special message for the newer generations who are trying to sustain a relationship. “I don’t think people are as concerned as we were about the future,” the man told Rossy. “I don’t think they care, they just spend,” his wife added. Then Rossy asked if they had any advice for their younger selves. “Try to be as positive as you can because tomorrow can be a better day unless you make it worse,” the man replied.
