Toddler dad puzzled as one child cried every time he saw him at daycare — then he saw the other dad and it all made sense
Children notice far more than adults give them credit for, but they do not always have the context to make sense of what they see. One such incident happened to Instagram user and comedian Dylan Gott, who goes by @dylangott, when he couldn't figure out why another child kept crying when he came to pick up his son at daycare. However, when he met the boy's father, everything became clear and left him laughing. He shared the hilarious story on Instagram on April 15, 2026.
For the longest time, Gott could not understand why that child reacted so strongly whenever he arrived for pickup. The boy was not just upset; he was having a full meltdown each time Gott walked in. Then one day, he happened to run into the child’s father in the hallway, and the mystery solved itself instantly. The two men looked almost exactly alike. Every time Gott came to collect his own son, the little boy likely believed his dad was showing up, leaving with another child, then somehow returning later. For a kid trying to make sense of the world, that kind of double-dad confusion probably felt like pure chaos.
That was when Gott decided something had to be done. Part of it was simple compassion because no one enjoys watching a little kid collapse in uncontrollable tears as if his whole world is ending. Another part was the hilarious possibility that the boy might carry this mystery for years. So, in full coordination, he and the child’s father arranged to arrive together and stand side by side in hopes of proving that the two were completely different people. Gott later joked, “Just so years later, this kid’s not in therapy like, ‘I know you have a second family, dad, and why would you pick up my other brother?’”
Since children have only a small amount of life experience to refer to, confusing one person for another is far from an isolated case. In another instance, a 3-year-old girl named Kali became convinced she had just spotted someone very special while on vacation with her mother. They were out walking when Kali suddenly froze after noticing an older gray-haired man sitting quietly on a bench nearby. To her, this was no ordinary stranger. With his white beard and gentle look, he perfectly matched the picture she had built in her mind of Santa Claus. Determined to capture proof, the little girl grabbed her mother’s phone and began secretly taking photos and videos from a distance.
Her mother later shared that she did not have the heart to tell her daughter it was not really him. Viewers loved the innocence of the misunderstanding, seeing it as a reminder of how children blend imagination with the world around them. Because for Kali, it was not a random vacation memory at all. It was the day she found Santa resting between Christmas duties.
