Two strangers approached a woman near the Eiffel Tower during her solo birthday trip — moments later, their behavior made her fear the worst
A solo trip can bring unforgettable memories, but it can also place travelers in situations where they need to stay alert. A woman celebrating her birthday in Paris experienced a frightening encounter that changed the way she looked at traveling alone. Instagram user Djanaya Hampton shared her story on July 30, 2026, under the username @dijonnai___, explaining how two strangers approached her while she was spending time near the Eiffel Tower. The interaction started as a casual conversation, but the events that followed left her deeply concerned about her safety.
Djanaya explained that she had planned the Paris visit as part of her birthday tradition of taking solo trips. While waiting for sunset near the Eiffel Tower, two men came close and started talking to her. They asked about her background and whether she was alone, and she avoided giving them much information. The interaction later raised fears of a possible human trafficking attempt when their behavior became more concerning. They invited her to join them at a party and tried to take pictures with her, which made her uncomfortable. She got even more terrified when she noticed one of the men pointing toward her while speaking with another stranger nearby. She immediately called her best friend and explained what was happening.
The woman walked through nearby restaurants and public areas to make sure no one was following her before heading to the train station. To her horror, the man came with a group and surrounded her in the train. After trying to lose them at multiple stops, she was on the verge of breaking down, fearing for her safety. Fortunately, she bumped into a security guard, who later spoke with her, helped her move away from the area, and assisted her in getting an Uber. According to the UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2024, human trafficking remains a major global issue. The report highlighted that the number of identified trafficking victims recovered after the decline seen during the pandemic. In 2022, recorded cases were higher than before COVID-19, showing a 25% rise from 2019. It also revealed that women and girls continued to represent the majority of detected victims, making up 61% of cases globally.
In an update video, Djanaya explained that she went to the Australian embassy and explained what had happened. They also informed her that she was at risk of being targeted on the black market in Europe and advised her to avoid public transport and limit travel. She was urged to take the first flight back home. She added that she stayed silent about the experience for more than a year because it was difficult to revisit, but she eventually decided to share her story to raise awareness and help others stay cautious.
