Vets thought they were treating a stray Chihuahua’s leg fracture — then the X-ray revealed something unbelievable hiding inside
One of the most difficult parts of rescuing stray animals is that they cannot explain what hurts or how long they have been suffering. Many arrive looking like they have one obvious injury, only for veterinarians to discover far more serious problems hidden beneath the surface. When someone called Humane Society of Tampa Bay on May 7, 2026, and mentioned a limping stray Chihuahua named Edward, they immediately brought him in for treatment. However, a quick X-ray scan revealed a problem far more serious. The organization shared Edward’s story on Facebook, where it quickly gained attention before being reported by PEOPLE on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The painful limp on the Chihuahua mix was eventually traced back to a fracture in his leg. For many rescue cases, that injury alone would have been serious enough to demand immediate attention. However, veterinarians at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay decided to perform a full-body X-ray just to make sure there were no additional hidden complications. That extra step ended up saving the dog’s life. While reviewing the scans, vets discovered foreign objects lodged inside Edward’s stomach and colon, including an object in his colon and an 18-karat gold star necklace in his stomach.
The object in his colon appeared likely to pass naturally, but the larger tangled necklace sitting inside his stomach posed a life-threatening risk because it could have caused a deadly blockage if it moved into his intestines. The shocking discovery forced the team to rush Edward into emergency abdominal surgery. “Our vet team had to perform emergency surgery to save his life,” Nash McCutchen, the shelter’s director of marketing and design, later explained during an interview with Newsweek. And unfortunately, those foreign objects were far from the only medical issues the small stray was dealing with.
Along with the emergency procedure, Edward also required multiple dental extractions, neutering, and treatment for anemia, which had already left his body significantly weakened. The comment section was filled with people shocked by Edward's condition, while some even expressed interest in adopting him. NancyAnn said, "I rescued a paralyzed Chihuahua from the Tampa Humane Society over ten years ago. He was my favorite soul in the world. I would love to know when Edward is up for adoption!" LyndaSpooner wrote, "He sure is cute! Hope once he gets back to eating food regularly, he doesn't swallow things like that anymore." LeslieInman remarked, "Whomever adopts him should get the Gold Star necklace!"
However, Edward is still far from fully recovered because the injured stray may eventually need to have his fractured leg amputated as well. According to the rescue organization, veterinarians are currently waiting for his blood levels to stabilize before they can safely move forward with another major surgery. Still, despite everything the small dog has endured, the fact that he was rescued in time, treated for multiple painful conditions, and finally relieved of at least some of his suffering makes the story deeply emotional. And honestly, one cannot help but feel grateful for the good Samaritan who saw a limping stray dog and decided his life was worth saving.
