Wife broke down after airport denied wheelchair help for her husband with ALS — then a stranger in uniform stepped in unexpectedly
People with disabilities often need extra care and should be treated with sensitivity. There are times when they or their family members may find themselves in situations that require additional help and special consideration to ensure a smoother and more manageable experience. A Brazilian woman, Ana Clara Butcher (@anaclarabutcher), found herself in such a situation at an airport when she requested special assistance for her husband, who uses a wheelchair due to a medical condition. She shared the incident on Instagram, where she broke down after the airport refused to provide help. However, what happened next, when a stranger in uniform stepped in, left her completely surprised.
Butcher mentioned that her husband uses a wheelchair because he has ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness that worsens over time, according to the Mayo Clinic. The airport denied any special assistance to help him board the flight. This wasn't easy for Butcher to handle, as her mother-in-law also needed additional help. Overwhelmed, she broke down in tears. That’s when a flight attendant noticed and stepped in to help. Seeing her husband left without support at the gate, he stayed with them and ensured they weren’t alone until proper assistance arrived.
“God sent this flight attendant from South Africa who saw me crying and stood up for us!” she shared, as the video showed a uniformed flight attendant smiling warmly at her. He was Leonard from British Airways, as she wrote in the caption. Not only did he stay with them until they got help, but he also advocated for them to be moved from economy class to premium class. The flight attendant also asked the couple several times if they needed anything and if there was anything else he could do to improve their experience. “He even managed to arrange a special dinner for us,” Butcher mentioned.
Leonard’s intervention proved invaluable for Butcher, especially since both her husband and mother-in-law required special assistance. While her husband was denied support at the airport, British Airways states that it offers assistance, such as escorts to and from the aircraft, help with stairs when needed, and transport for wheelchairs and mobility aids. However, passengers are required to inform the airline of their needs at least 48 hours before departure.
Butcher later filmed herself and her husband smiling on the flight, grateful for Leonard’s help and kindness. “People like him should be celebrated, because they truly make the world a better place,” the video subtitles said. She hoped the flight attendant would receive full recognition for saving their trip and making them feel “the love of Christ.” At the same time, she encouraged others to never lose hope, believing that there are always kind people in the world ready to help when needed.
