Woman demanded $25 a day after neighbor advertised her private dock to rental guests without permission — his response took the entitlement further
Dealing with neighbors who treat your property as their own can quickly turn messy. One lake dock owner, who goes by u/Mission-Extension321 on Reddit, had experienced something similar when the owner of a neighboring vacation rental advertised their private dock to guests without permission. When asking him to remove it from the listing didn’t work, she decided to charge $25 a day. But instead of backing down, as mentioned in the post she shared on October 19, 2026, the neighbor did something that ended up frustrating the owner even more.

The woman said rental guests kept using her family’s dock for weeks, often leaving beer cans behind. Things came to a head when she returned home one day to find a group of strangers hanging out there. One of them even showed her the rental listing, which advertised the dock as an amenity, even though it belonged to her. When she asked the owner to remove it, he brushed off her concerns, saying, "They're just sitting on it; it’s not hurting anything." Frustrated, she offered a simple solution that the guests could pay $25 a day to use the dock, as long as they asked first. But instead of fixing the listing, the owner complained about her in a local lake association group, calling her a "dock Karen" for "charging families to sit on wood." To make matters worse, he changed the listing photo but still left part of her dock visible, still mentioning the private dock.
The woman’s biggest concern was that the owner still hadn’t removed the dock from his listing despite the warnings, even after she made it clear he didn’t have permission to advertise it. Changing the main photo didn’t really solve anything, since part of her dock was still visible in the new image. Meanwhile, his guests could continue arriving with the impression that they were allowed to use it.

Reddit users largely sided with her, and several suggested that she stop offering access altogether. u/SpecialistForward778 wrote, “Put up a no trespassing sign. Call the cops if anyone gets on your dock.” u/PrikNamPlassum agreed and said, "I'd rescind the $25 a day offer of use though, deny any access, present it as a liability issue, and put up signage." Meanwhile, u/molotovmerkin summed up another concern, commenting, “This is a liability issue!”

The neighbors forced her to charge $25 for using her dock, and they still did not stop showing a sense of entitlement. This is not the first time neighbors have pushed a property owner to put up a charge for using their property's space. In another similar incident, a couple repeatedly parked in an elderly woman’s reserved spot, insisting she could use one of the many other empty spaces. After getting nowhere with her complaints, she parked her own car bumper-to-bumper with theirs and left a note demanding $150 a day to use her spot. When the couple claimed they had an emergency and asked her to move, she raised the price to $200. They eventually paid up and stopped parking there.
