Meeting someone for the first time should feel exciting, not raise concerns about your safety. TikTok user Stephanie Matto shared one such dating experience that completely changed how she approached meeting people through dating apps. After driving nearly 40 minutes to meet a man she had been talking to, an unsettling encounter at the meeting spot made her leave immediately. In a TikTok video posted under the handle @stephaniematto on December 10, 2024, Matto revealed that what she discovered on the dating app after getting home only reinforced her fears and convinced her she had narrowly avoided something far more serious.

Matto shared how her Tinder date suggested meeting at what he described as a “hidden gem” restaurant located outside the city. Before leaving, she entered the address into her GPS and noticed the restaurant appeared to be closed. After asking him about it, he reassured her that the business had simply not updated its hours. As Matto sat alone in the deserted parking lot, she immediately felt something was wrong. Just as she decided to leave, another vehicle pulled up beside hers. Without waiting to see who had arrived, she quickly drove away and kept checking her mirrors to make sure nobody was following her. Matto later revealed that after she safely returned home, she discovered the man had already unmatched her on the dating app.

Trusting your instincts can sometimes be the safest decision when a situation suddenly feels wrong. Once Matto reached home safely, she realized she had never learned the man's last name or taken screenshots of his dating profile, leaving her with no way to report the account after it disappeared. She later explained that the incident happened several years earlier, yet she still felt lucky to have walked away safely.

Reflecting on the experience, Matto said the incident was the reason she eventually deleted Tinder. She also shared that similar situations had happened to other women, making her believe extra caution was necessary when meeting strangers online. She encouraged others to stay off online dating apps or at least learn a person's full name before agreeing to meet. She also added that people should always choose familiar public places for first dates.

Getting to know someone online does not always mean you truly know who they are. In another story, a woman drove to meet a man she had matched with on Facebook Dating, where his name was spelled backward, but a last-minute search by her mother changed everything. While she was on the way, her mom felt that “something feels weird” and searched the man's real name, uncovering several serious criminal charges. After reaching the parking lot, her mother firmly told her, “Do not go inside.” The woman then called the man, confirmed the information, and decided, “I’m going home. I can’t make that risk,” before blocking him and returning home safely.
