Woman expected the man beside her to throw a tantrum over a screaming toddler on a flight — what he did instead left her nearly in tears
A crying toddler on a flight can test even the most patient passenger, especially when the little one is seated right next to you. But when Threads user Evelyn Shannon, who goes by @lovelightevelyn, boarded a flight to Las Vegas and saw a woman in the aisle seat struggling with her screaming toddler, she expected the man sitting beside her to get frustrated. Instead, the stranger's reaction caught her completely off guard. In a post shared on Monday, October 19, 2026, Shannon said that the moment reminded her that a little kindness can go a long way.
Shannon said she was sitting by the window when a woman boarded with a toddler who was screaming so intensely that the child's face had turned red. With a man in the middle seat between them, she braced herself for what she called a "man-tantrum" over the noise. But the man did the exact opposite. He spent the flight distracting the little one, being silly and playing games to help the mother out. Shannon was so touched that she "almost got teary." Before the flight ended, the man offered her a little reassurance, saying, "These are the hard parts, but it all goes so fast. Enjoy it as much as you can."

She could tell the mother was moved, too. She overheard the woman quietly thanking the man toward the end of the flight. Shannon later crossed paths with him again on the way to baggage claim and made sure to tell him, "That was very kind of you." Impressed by the man's gesture, people took to the comments section to share their opinions. @skielyk commented, "My nephew would absolutely have done that." @ayarnkat remarked, "It's the little things that can help even if you don't see it, feel it, or touch it." Meanwhile, @caaronmd explained, "When we become fathers, our brain changes into Dad-Brain, and we’re more than happy to be helpful." Her encounter was a reminder that kindness doesn't always have to be a grand gesture. Sometimes, it's simply helping a tired parent through a difficult moment instead of judging them for it.

Some people have a way of comforting parents when they're struggling with a fussy child, even when they're complete strangers. Emily, a mom traveling to Florida with her 2½-year-old son, had packed snacks and toys and downloaded movies to keep him occupied, but nothing seemed to work when he started crying. As she grew self-conscious about the other passengers noticing, a woman from five rows behind came over and started chatting with her son about his toy cars and his trip. She even praised Emily for being a "great mom" and turned a stressful flight into a much kinder experience.
