Woman grew up craving validation from her ‘strict’ dad — his request on her first day at work made her feel she had ‘won at life’
Showing up for your kid is one of the most profound gifts you can give them throughout childhood as well as adulthood. A Reddit user who goes by u/LandscapeReady didn’t get this privilege as she grew up with a "strict" dad. In her post shared on June 1, 2026, she explained how he provided financially for the family, but never came to school events, and always reprimanded her. Nothing changed until she grew up, finished her studies, and got a job. It was then that she confronted her father and, in turn, received a request from him that left her stunned and overwhelmed with joy.
The woman explained that much of her childhood was defined by her father's “strict” upbringing. It created a void in their relationship and also affected her confidence. Eventually, she chose to build her own life, and the man’s opinion and validation were no longer crucial. It wasn’t until recently, at the age of 25, that she decided to speak up. After earning two degrees and securing a job, she communicated how inferior her father unintentionally made her feel. While he did apologize, she didn’t know what to think of it. To her surprise, he then made an unimaginable request — “My dad wants to drop me to my first day at my new job.” She was unsure how to respond, but admitted it felt “special."
The random offer was even more priceless since the daughter had given up the idea of bonding with her father because of his parenting style. Over time, it became less about correction and more about his absence. He constantly compared her to her cousins, but never showed up for important events like her first day at school. But when she communicated that she didn’t like being belittled or compared against impossible standards, he was understanding about it.
When he asked to drop her off, it felt like he wanted to give their relationship another chance and become a better parent. What made it more surprising was that he was willing to take the day off just for her, something he had never done before. When this man showed up for his daughter, it felt nothing less than winning the lottery. “Yes, I did have a super strict dad growing up. Can't change that. But now today, I feel I won at life,” she noted.
Fathers can have a soft spot; they just need a reminder to express their love openly for their children. In another story, a woman named Olivia Thompson recalled how she was away from home in college and having a tough time. During a phone call, her father made an unusual request. He asked her to check her door to see if any packages had arrived. Confused, she opened the door, only to find her father standing there. “After what felt like a thunderstorm of a week, he felt like the rainbow that came after,” Thompson shared. Sometimes, kids don’t need money and rules as much as they need the strong yet gentle comfort of their dads.
