Woman had the best response when salespersons at car dealership ignored her because of her 'basic clothes'

A few of the staff presumed that the young woman was too poor to be able to afford a Mercedes car and dismissed their duty towards her.

Showing basic respect to others is a human quality that everyone should have, irrespective of one’s stature. If you’re in a position of service, you’re likely to exercise the same even more. However, some people are too quick to judge others based on their appearances and it’s not long before they get a reality check in the most humbling way. A woman named Daisy Delgado took to Quora to share her experience with rude salespersons who deemed her poor based on her outfit— but the woman had a top-notch response.

Delgado explained that she was 22 at the time of the incident and was headed to a Mercedes car dealership in a tank top and "basic clothing". “In their eyes, I was literally the definition of poor,” she remarked. She added that most of the staff presumed by her looks that she simply couldn’t afford to buy a car and was only window shopping. However, that was not the case. “I was walking around the showroom; meanwhile, three salespeople walked right past me. None of them recognized my presence, let alone greet me,” she recalled. Delgado laid eyes on a sports Mercedes and knew it was the one she wanted.

Unfortunately, due to the staff's presumption and judgemental thinking, she was forced to wait by the car until someone approached her. “I stood by the car until one of two things happened: The security would come and kick me out or a salesperson would finally help me,” she wrote. After a few minutes of waiting, a kind salesperson approached her, knowing that she meant business. The rep who attended to the woman wasn’t any of the previous three who glared at her. Seeing other staff still maintaining their bias, Delgado ensured she taught them a lesson. The woman went on with the test drive and the purchase process.

In no time, the woman signed the required documents and bought the car. She was glad to learn that the rep who assisted her was new on the job and she basically helped him make his first sale. She noted that “having the other three salespeople who ‘didn’t’ recognize me, recognize me buying a car and losing their bank commission” was the best feeling ever. She even shared a picture of herself in her basic outfit, posing against her brand-new car with the salesperson. Several people applauded the woman’s confident move to purchase her car at the same dealership after experiencing discrimination.

Ryan Bales commented, “And this is why judging books by their covers is a very foolish thing to do. Well done. Now you have something that will remind you of all the hard work you have put into getting that car.” Bret Mishler added, “It’s humorous to see what people consider ‘basic or poor.’ I mean, you walked into a Mercedes dealership.” Geoffrey Lance Jenkins added, “I am glad that you stood your ground and handled yourself like a real woman.”
