Cashier insists little girl buy doll that 'looks more like you' — kid leaves her speechless with mic-drop reply
No one learns racism and discrimination as a kid. These ugly factors occupy a person's mind after growing up in a shallow society lacking basic morals. If we want to bring a change in such biased views, we need to improve how we interact with and raise children. A mom named Brandi Benner shared that when her toddler Sophia picked out a dark-skinned doll, the cashier began rooting seeds of racism in her, per a post from Love What Matters. The employee was insisting the girl pick a doll that resembled her by color and wasn’t dark-skinned. However, the shrewdly adorable toddler had an epic response.
The mom mentioned that she wished to gift her daughter a “special prize” after she successfully completed a month of potty training. The excited girl wanted to pick a doll. “The obsession is real,” the mom added. The little girl picked up a dark-skinned doll and was ready to enjoy her playtime. “She was looking at all the dolls and telling me they were all so pretty and when she saw the doctor one, she stopped and said, ‘Mommy, she’s a doctor like me! I want this one,’” Benner recalled, per PEOPLE. The parents were, however, stunned to see the cashier interrupt them at checkout. “While we were checking out, the cashier asked Sophia if she was going to a birthday party. We both gave her a blank stare,” the caption read.
The parents later realized that the cashier had made such a comment due to the type of doll the girl had picked. Despite the mom explaining the situation to her, she was adamant. “The woman gave me a puzzled look and turned to Sophia and asked, 'Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?'” the mom added. Benner noted that the cashier was just trying to make conversation. “She was an elderly woman who looked like my own grandma. I don’t think she understood the implications of her words or how discouraging it could be to anyone else’s daughter,” she explained. Sophia was being her innocent little self, unsure of what the issue was. She excitedly assured the cashier that she wanted the doll but the cashier was bent on her theory.
She went on to speak to the little girl and said, “But she doesn't look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you.” Furious with her frame of thought, the mom was about to reprimand her when Sophia rendered a mic-drop reply. She confidently said, “Yes, she does. She's a doctor like I'm a doctor. And I'm a pretty girl and she's a pretty girl.” The toddler went on to go beyond color and point out everything she found pretty about the doll. “See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?” Sophia remarked. The cashier was left speechless and decided to proceed with the checkout. The little girl waived off racism and discrimination with her confident goodness without even realizing it. “This experience just confirmed my belief that we aren't born with the idea that color matters. Skin comes in different colors just like hair and eyes, every shade is beautiful,” the mom concluded.
