Woman in her 40s at TJ Maxx overheard saying marrying men is a ‘waste of time’ — every woman in line had just one thing to say
Whether positive or negative, experiences in relationships often mirror what others have felt but may not have expressed out loud. A recent moment in a store line caught attention online for its honest tone. A woman shopping at TJ Maxx overheard a shopper in her 40s speaking openly about marriage while on a phone call, saying it is a waste of time. The clip was later posted by Brittany, known as @brittanyybowen, on TikTok on Thursday, April 9, 2026, where it quickly drew interest from viewers curious about modern relationships and changing views.

Then, in one clear moment, it became obvious that every woman in that line felt almost the same way. Brittany explained that the woman in her 40s was heard saying marrying men felt like a “waste of time” and repeatedly asking, “Why get married?” Her words made several women waiting nearby laugh and agree. Brittany, who is 29, joined in, noticing women across age groups, including someone in her 50s and others in their 40s, reacting in support of the same idea.
As the discussion continued, even a woman in her 60s, who was wearing a ring, shared a similar view, saying women often end up doing everything on their own. Brittany said she chuckled at first, but then spoke with others in line, finding that many of them had similar thoughts shaped by their own lives. She recalled saying, “For every 50 that tell me not to do it, there is one" who might still consider marriage again, often after going through divorce.
She also reflected on her own journey, saying dating once felt easier and more fun when she was younger and carefree. Now, she feels that “the older I get and the wiser I become, the farther marriage seems to me.” At the same time, she shared her wish to become a mother someday. She added that while she knows a few happily married couples, she believes they are rare, and feels some people who married early may have simply settled due to pressure or timing.
Brittany also spoke about stories she has heard from others, including cases where marriages involved cheating or a lack of support after separation. She noted that many women are left to manage responsibilities alone, both in and out of relationships. Studies also suggest that men are about 7 percent more likely to cheat compared to women, adding to such concerns. Even so, Brittany admitted she is unsure what to do with this advice, as she still hopes for a happy family life one day.
Many women in the comment section also shared their personal experiences, with internet users divided in their opinions. @stlinthecle wrote, "I didn't settle, and I'm not miserable. Married 31 years this year. When you find the right person, you will feel different." @simply_mama exclaimed, "You've got to marry your best friend. The actual person you feel so comfortable with. The person you want to be with 24/7 and don’t get bored with." While @pattimccoy76 commented, "I’ll be 50 in June and have been married twice. Not worth it. My peace and mental health are way more important to me."
